Hi all you scannyfans (or not) Ive driven both rigid and tractor units , day cabs very cramped , steering lock on 8 W tippers poor , sleeper cabs good , 3 over 3 plus split gearbox brilliant best manual ever I think. Didn’t older ones have a 5over5 box or am I imagining / altzhiemering ?
They did 5 over 5 on the 112s, cant remember if early 113s had it, it was a dog leg 6th twisted ya shoulder abit, and still suffer from it now.
good boxes though, and wondered why lesser trucks needed 18, what did they do with them all, lol.
Thanks Weeto . thought I had it right it was an E reg 143 500 great unit at the time , seem to remember used to miss 5th out when empty and go 4th to 6th Jim
Bang on Dessy!!
Opticruise,if i’m right in thinking was designed by 2 chimps who we’re given tools for the first time and this was the best they could come up with.
So easy to confuse when i’m in manual and want to skip gears, pull the lever up twice and it just goes “oh bugger!,he wants 2 gears what shall we do??, er,er,er i know we’ll just put him into neutral, make him look a wally on the islands and let him struggle in auto!!”
I think my r series Highline bottom bunk was designed by the same people who make these multi function rooms in Ikea, making bunks up!!,bloody hell,my old man used to have to make his bed up in an AEC Mandator in the ,70’s,is this how far we’ve come??
After coming off a Fh XL i felt gutted coming onto this heap,i want my Volvo back!!,to me Scanias are the eqivelant of an ERF in the ,80’S,i.e a Gaffers truck.
Since driving this cr.apheap, ive started to suffer pins and needles down my left leg and a bad left knee, all because you cant stretch your leg out because Scania won’t properly convert a truck from LHD to RHD.
And all this comes from a man who did his apprenticship at a Scania dealer and thought the 3 series was the bees knees.
I think the’res far better trucks on the road now,Scania is just a name.
I drive a p380 8x4 tipper with the cab and half and I really like it other than it other than the. Turning circle is pants and the seat is uncomfortable but I had a 4 series normal day cab before this so this is a big improvment I have driven a an opti cruise 8 wheeler why someone would opt for that ■■■■■ box is beyond me other critercism is they are a bit overpriced for what they are

One big criticism, retarders, the standard Scania exhauster makes a noise and does little else be honest if it’s turned off you can run half the day before you notice
So true!
I’ve driven most of my day many a time before realising its off for whatever reason.
Generally, I like Scanias, the R440 seems to not pull as well as my previous R420 imo, the old 4 Series topline was a nice place to live all week, shame they ditched the top “over the dash” bunk - although rolling out of said bunk after too many is a painful experience not to be forgotten or repeated!
I am probably in a minority of one where given the choice between my 10plate R440 or a new 11 plate Volvo FH 460, I would actually take the Scania!
I have drove our P380 for a couple of day’s as my trailer failed DOE(in a spectacular fashion)and the regular drive bust his shoulder so my Actros is having a rest in the yard anyway, the truck is very cramped the long distance mirror’s belong on a coach they are very rounded and too aangled. It pull’s well up to 60kph it’s ■■■■■ after that. The seat stick’s in your back about halfway up and the driving position is off centre. The dash is very plasticy for a supposed top brand truck and the ride is very very poor,go over a ■■■ ■■■■ and you’d think a wheel fell off
The box is fairly good though and i’d say the truck will go forever.I get out of it in the evening with a smug smile knowing that the Actros is a superior truck to Scania and i used to be a big Scania fan untill the ache’s and pain’s started.
Scania’s are tractor’s

The current Actros is underrated (imo) and you see a lot more new Megaspaces than you do Toplines, probably something to do with the price Where I work my old Topline and GXL still work alongside my Megaspace and the only miss is grunt and go (i-shift the best automated gearbox) of the Volvo other than that it’s the Merc by far the better truck

I’ve got a 3 pedal Opti R420 and am getting used to it and quite like it, I didn’t realise how much I liked it until I drove our manual R480.
Mine is a 12m long 8x2 beavertail and I reckon that the turning circle aint too bad, axle up I can just about anywhere and need about the same room as my previous 6x2 when loaded. Axle down I need a bit more room but not too horrific. So glad I got a R series, the P cabs are very cramped for legroom and the short cab is fit only for short multidrop type distribution. Deffo not a place to spend any time, agree that the bigger day cab is much better.
My old p cabbed 4 series sleeper had a a comfy bunk (although tricky to get in to ) but the bunk cushion was one single piece and the cab wall lining was fabric covered foam. This R series has got a fleet spec wipe clean interior which is much noisier and fold up bits on the cushion / mattress. Overall I reckon the old R cab 4 series sleeper was a better place. Still I’m not a night out driver so I’m happy with the extra space.

Lets have the truth and nothing but the truth about the various models etc .

all i want in my R420 is the matress, I-Shift, & the grip from my old FM. i’d be pretty happy with that, it pulls better than the 440 volvo, well it hangs in there longer on the hills !
we’re having problems with a few 58plate G 480, gearboxes, one just been rebuilt, another going to be done , & the 60 plate 440 is a regular in the scania workshops
in all ive driven 82’s, 93’s 112’s 113’s & even had a few drives in the 142’s &143’s & the awfull early 4 series P & R cabs which to my mind could have stayed in the R&D programme a little longer, never a fan of the P cabs but quite liking my R now & i think they got it right with the G as it’s a mixture of the two & not all or nothing
Well im afraid i’m going to have to eat my words about what i said about Scanias.
Now i’m on days i’m using every motor we’ve got and for the past 4 days i’ve been using the new “r” series and its a revalation over my earlier experiences.
Opticruise seems to be a lot quicker on the 10mth R440 ive drove today, holds the road like glue, very comfortable to drive and a briliiant sound system.
If Stobarts reinstate tramping i’d have no problem with going tramping in one of these, dare i say it,i prefer them to my old Volvo.
