I’m doing a stint with a 53 plate with an 8 speed box, when it’s cranked up to to the limiter on the motorway it’s as if there’s a gear missing, it’s doing about 1800rpm well into the yellow. It’s a bit of a thrashing and is very tiring, am I just too used to my 420 or has anyone else noticed it?
It’s probably been specced with a low ratio diff in back axle, handy if your running around the hills but no fun on the motorway, we have DAF with the same problem revving at 1900rpm @89kmh
The advice fellow members gave me was to turn the radio up
Well it seems im the only one who remembers your old signature…
it started with " Me in a …"
But the solution to your problem is “IF” you are on an hourly rate then slow down till the needle is in the green and if you get picked up on it just say you were taught to drive economically and treat the engine and drive train with respect coz theyre the friends that are gonna get you home
If your salaried then thrash it and turn up the radio as previously suggested.
Fon’t help they have gearing for site work. I drove an old 32 tonner MAN tipper with a 16speed box, the engine was revving it’s nuts off on the motorway, and 1st low would probably drive it up a cliff…
8 Wheels, i own and operate a 94d 260 and it runs on the limiter at just under 1500revs but you gotta watch pullin away on a steep click as bottom gear could be lower, used to run a Foden with a 13speed fuller and i think it spoilt me as you had grandaddy low as well as bottom gear.
Well it seems im the only one who remembers your old signature…
Me? in a 340, how vulgar.
I’t would seem that I have sunk to new depths.
I’ve still got my Scania 420hp 6 wheeler but work is a bit thin so I’ve subbed myself out.
This new job is almost entirely within the M25 and involves a fair bit of central London. So the high revving engine isn’t that much of a problem, it just seemed odd when I thrashed it to Bedford and back yesterday. I can’t believe it’s been specced specially as it’s a Hewden wagon and they’ve got hundreds of the things.
