thats it, you could have the wheel the other way round aswell if need be but some of the old tandem trailers we had were very close to the back lights and when you turned they would catch the lights and mudgaurds and pull them off thats why the wheels were left on the inside. they didnt look rite when they was like that
no they didnt mate got a pic of it from a certain angle and it looks like a 4 wheeler unit will post all me dads pics up when me scanners sorted
ye, they looked like a very short wheelbase when they was coming towards you and then when they passed the axle appeared. sammy andersons from motherwell uesd to run there first tag axle scanias with two wheels on one side and just one one the other
The photos I have are from the front and slightly to the side and it indeed looks like a very short wheelbase 4x2. Unfortunately I don’t have a scanner or anything other than mobile Internet at the moment so I can’t post them up. Thanks for all your help guys, and it is indeed a very small world articmonkey! First time I’ve seen that tag set up on anything other than a 112 as well, interesting stuff.
like i say when i get scanner sorted will put the pic in question up

Amazing pictures on the Selby/Goole threads. The Marathon looks quite tidy, I always thought Mooneys livery was quite
smart, I remember some of the units were in all over red, certainly my Uncles 113 carried the red livery. Few other recognisable outfits there too. The Johnsons photos rang a bell somewhere in my mind. Did they go bust? I remember Mooneys yard was chock full of similar liveried wagons at one point, stored there whilst official
looking folk with clipboards counted and inspected them, presumably taking stock of the companys assets. I stand to be corrected, it’s just the livery looks oddly familiar. They were all parked up by the maintenance sheds in the “other yard” (I remember two, one with the fitters and the other with offices and warehousing)
hi lads ,artic monkey, you are right about sam’s having 2 wheels on the inside tag axle, that was their spare if they ever got a punture, bumper
thanks bumper, just glad someone else new about it aswell and didnt think i was mad
hi hydro. ye johnsons went bust a long time ago. and as for them red scanias that mooneys ran they had two and they never got painted, do you remember the two lads in the garage at selby martin (grabber) sadly no longer with us and derek. the old yard is still there ware the workshop was but the other place ware the office and warehouse was has been knocked down. i work for watsons whos yard you had to pass through to get to the top yard(the red volvo before the marathon picture) john elcock got that marathon new, im sure your grandad will remember him, was talking to alec forsyth a couple of week ago aswell, another long time serving driver my grandad was colin shipley. all those pictures came from alan at riverside motors selby they used to paint a lot of lorries from local companies
Hi, dont know why our little Scania came with a reversed rear axle, it was an ex Ind Coup unit, and we ran it for a short while with it as it came, but it seemed to track slightly wrong, so we swaped the configeration around, seemed to sort the steering, and looked a whole lot better which pleased the driver.
The Scanias my dad drove for carron transport had the wheels turned out on the tag with supersingles on them, until 91 when the first air suspension tag unit came and from then on they had the single wheel hub set up at the back.
this early model 112 was still working (as can be seen), less than two years ago.she had the same unusual rear lift set up.
Robson’s of Carlisle used to have a couple of 'A" reg Scania 112s that they ran with tipper trailers, sand to United Glass in Alloa, and they had the same axle set up. My Dad drove one for a while, and he enquired about why they were like that and was told that there was reduced tyre wear on the tag axle as opposed to having them on the ‘outside’.

Hello All
This is a photo of my dads 112M brand new with the same wheel configuration has mentioned.Dad said it was a horrible ride but can’t remember the reason why the wheel was turned that way.I seem to remember he could only use certain trailers. The lorry was on contract to USL Line and all there trailers were swan neck 40fts.I don’t remember him pulling a 20ft.But why build a lorry that can only haul certain trailers■■?
Regards R-Jacko
not sure mate but scanias allways did a tag axle on the earlier ones the 111 & 141 were just the same, when they did a twin steer one it was a totally different story, no shaking or going straight on at traffic lights they were a bit useless in the wet and if you was on a site as they would get stuck easy. can you remember the only one they had at holmans andy that bruce harris used to drive i think it was the first one with the green and white cab same as your old y reg ended up been painted totally different to them older tag axles and i remember that one of djs been the worst for going straight on for some reason
