Scammell

Here’s a Scarab I spotted at Llandudno truck show this month. It is a tractive unit with a cunningly demountable luton caravan body! Robert

Found some pic’s from the very early stage…

Cheers, Patrick

On its first trip.

Got some more of Watfords finest, all seen at this year’s Dorset steam fair.

Scammell Handyman my Dad drove when he worked for Midland Storage

Scammell cab resting in Rotherham. Anyone know of Rowland’s

I recall that when I was at Brady’s in the mid/late 60’s they were officially Leyland and Standard Triumph Dealers but they also ran a Scammell eight wheeler and a couple of Scammell units and all of them had the Gardner 150LX engine, they also ran a single 4x2 AEC Mandator which was a disaster so “The Big’un” ( Bob Brady Snr.) cancelled the six Mammouth Minors he had “screwed” out of British Leyland and they then started to run Scania 110’s and a number of Mk1 6x2 Atkinson units and that was the end of Leyland as far as Bradys were concerned. Cheers Bewick.

Hi All

As posted elsewhere on this forum - I have started work on this one. Loads to do though.

Any ideas as to what model this is?

Not sure what model but Scammell made them for the Ministry of Transport as motorway gritters

Scammell 2-001.JPGIndeed they did.

Only seven of these gritters were produced by Scammell in 1960, all of them by the Unit Construction department at Watford. The bulk of the Ministry of Transport order being fulfilled by Atkinson.

Here’s a color shot of one.

Old adverts.(Click on pages twice to read)

Was it the B.R.S. (Parcels) who had a large fleet of green Scarabs.
And didn’t the old red book licences have automatic couplings on one of the categories  .

youtube.com/watch?v=4yR-5bbFivU

My BRS book only shows one picture of a BRS Scarab and says they were mostly used in Urban collection and delivery but does not say in what numbers although it mentions Carmarthen branch having five mainly working for BR, the Parcels section of the book doesn’t mention them but I would be surprised if they didn’t for again Urban parcels delivery. The red licence does mention Auto transmission but not couplings maybe it was this you could recall Mushrooman. Franky.

Hi Robert does the R8 Molasses tanker have 40x8 tires,it looks like them i recall when i started at BRS Corby in1963 there was one truck in the fleet an Atkinson 8 wheeler that had those tires,do you or one of our learned friends know if there was a difference in the stud pattern or the brake drum sizes that meant they had to be fitted with that size tire and rim?

Cheers Dig
