One used to see a lot of bonneted units with 12m trailers in France and in some other Continental countries too - Scandinavia had 'em too. But they would’ve been overlength here. When 13.6m trailers came in, I remember one enterprising chap managed to couple a 12m tautliner to a day-cabbed Scanny T112 and just keep within the length.

Strange outfit indeed, and certainly overlength. This should be a Renault CBH 340 or 385, usually fitted with a heavy-duty tipper for tough work on building sites or quarries. Many were sold in Africa, new or second-hand, or used in France as tractors to move heavy equipments (diggers, etc…); the army had quite a few of them. First one I see coupled to a standard dropside 3-axle trailor! I’ll try to get more about it.

Just a thought: does that say Enterprise Humanitaire on the trailer? If so, it may be one of those humanitarian aid trailers sent out to Africa laden with goodies as an equipage intended to stay out there and be run as transport. UK sent similar ones to Sudan at that time.

And while we’re on the subject of what’s written on those old French trailers; my French is not good but am I right in translating the box trailer (see below) as claiming to cover Lyon, the Jura, Eastern France, the foreign countries of northern Europe and TIR work?

On your first question I have no idea as I can’t really make out the second word. But you could be quite right.

On your second “tout le Nord” means all of northern France, le Nord being what the region was often referred to as.

Nowadays it seems a new term has come in to use to replace le Nord, “les hauts de France” which I translate as "the heights of France# or “upper France”. I think it sounds silly and I grimace each time I hear it.

Then the wording on the trailer (l’Etranger") means they will work outside France, in foreign countries, without specifying which.

Merci monsieur pour le clarification!

You’re perfectly right! This truck was part of a humanitarian convoy for Armenia.

You’ve got it right there. The last part means they’re certified for TIR transport, meaning they do not have to wait at the custom barriers.

I’ve just noticed the thread has reached 1,000,000 hits!! I never envisaged that when I started the thread.
It’s changed a bit, but I’m sure Saviem would be delighted with the evolution. RIP John. Regards Kev.

Thanks JS, more a tribute to John than me, I don’t contribute much to the thread. Apart from a couple of trips to Norway I was always a UK only driver, so although I check the thread regularly my l lack of European experience makes me keep my literary gob shut. Merry Xmas all. Regards Kev.

Quite an achievement indeed Kev! Well done by everyone participating and it’s a nice tribute to the great man.

No doubt you’re dreaming about driving this one Senior

It looks like it’s got quite a long chassis, was it converted into a tractor unit later in life I wonder…?

Or maybe fitted with a turntable on special order.

Looks a bit… streched though doesn’t it?

Did it belong to Couchet? As I don’t think I’ve seen that particular unit before…?

I guess it did. Couchet was (is it still?) a major heavy transport operator. They also used Unics. I don’t think the picture was streched; the guy in front looks normally balanced.

I think he meant the chassis being stretched, not the pic.

They’re not in the transport game anymore, but they certainly haven’t forgotten about their “roots”!

That’s exactly what I meant, cheers Dipster.

Thanks for the link. A short but interesting history, and plenty of pictures showing the various makes of Couchet’s trucks.

I think it says Saviem on the grille.

Merry Xmas chaps and chapesses! If you’re wondering why I’m infesting the forum at Christmas breakfast time it’s 'cos I’m holed up with a chest infection  . Oh well: tough! Time for some lorry-■■■■ then!
