Saskatoon advice wanted

Hi,i am interested in maybe making the move, was going to do it a few years ago but couldnt, however i can now,but as things have moved just wondering if anyone is still recruiting english drivers. I know about team driving for the first year, would rather drive solo but if team is what i got to do then hey i accept thatim ex international so time away does`nt bother me.
How much would i need to come over to Canada to set up ?

Thanks :grimacing:

Any reason why Saskatoon…

Not really, just liked the sound of it as it was where i was going when i looked into it .

Yeah … I liked the sound of Granville unill I came over here. Saskatoon is full of british drivers like Bob the dog, Dave Caldwell and many others but its in the middle of nowhere and freezing cold for about 5 months of the year. :sunglasses:

Unfortunately BTD does not live in Saskatoon, happily neither does DC, they live in Manitoba, Flat to the Mat is the only regular contributer on here that comes from the wastelands West of Manitoba and he’s banned for being a naughty naughty boy

Oh well ‘My Bad’ as they say round here, not looking very attractive for this bloke then

Maybe Saskatoon is not the way to go…

saskatoon is as good as any other place, their is an international airport there but flights are not really direct to the uk and quite expensive.

siemens group is the one to be looking at to start with in sask at the moment.

When you look at the job situation, Saskatchewan is probably the best province of the lot for immigration, Siemens is always on the look out and of the firms that import drivers they have the best reputation, they also make it easy to get PR, unlike Alberta, which is a bit of a nightmare from what I hear.

If you come over with Siemens bear in mind it ain’t the best job, not the worst either, but if they need to bring in staff from the other side of the world it can’t be up to much :bulb: If you want to leave there aren’t a lot of options up there, The three main centers for trucking are Toronto, Winnipeg and Calgary, so better to try and go to one of those Cities, in my opinion anyway

Alberta has H&R and WestCan, there are volumes of info about them on here, so read through it all and see what you think. Manitoba have a few firms, some of whom have been slated on here, again read through the previous threads. I have no idea what the Immigration situation is in Ontario, but it seems to help if you can’t speak English and have a penchant for wiping your arse with your fingers and wearing sandals

Oh and the reason Saskatoon has an international airport is for people to escape

I would try to find work in Winnipeg over Saskatoon as i think it is more up and comming than Sas, I think i saw someware that H & R were advertising pnp for Manitoba. Have a look at www.overtheroad.ca might find something on that also think you can get flights back to uk from may to october from winnipeg but might be via Iceland

As for how much it will cost to set yourself up over there depends on what lifestyle you want :sunglasses:
Hope this helps and good luck.

I agree about Winnipeg, not so sure about H&R though, they do have a reputation for ‘meat in the seat’ treatment for their drivers, I believe that Big Freight have LMOs available soon, my opinion of them is well documented on here  but, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them, it’s fairly relaxed there and they do allow you time to settle, rather than throwing you in the deep end with a lead weight in each hand as some will do

As for setting up costs, you can manage if you come over with a couple of grand in your bin, I did just that for the first couple of years, I was in a position to buy a house (with a mortgage of course) within two years of getting here, just from my income here, I didn’t need to, but I could have, you’ll need to work your nuts off, but it’s there if you want it

Don’t agree with the meat on the seat bit, But they do have the better equipment, unlike a certain company from saskatoon/edmonton. :imp:

None of them are good jobs, some are just less bad than others, from what I’ve seen and experienced you can do alright at most of them…as long as your face fits

I know people at most of the firms that bring drivers over, some hated them and got out asap, some are still there years later, as with everything, there are no guarantees one way or the other
