Salzburg Austria

Good Morning, Taking 3.5 tonne van to Salzburg end of January, Exhibition stands . Can you advise me on any rules and regs . Thank you

You will need winter tyres for Austria.

For Austria you need a Toll Vignette. You can get it at the most motorway stations at the borders.
The Speed Limit on motorway is 130 km/h for cars and transporters.Outside of city you have to look a the signs. At the most landstreets there is a speed limit of 100 km/h.

The germans want to see a record of rest days for van driving, for german reg van it is law but doubt that is the case for UK reg.

If there is time to spare visit Hitlers Eagles Nest villa on top of a mountain. The views up there are stunning.
The salt mine is worth a look.Slide down on a steep ride on a wooden track.
Mozarts house in Salzburg.
And a tour of The sound of music.See where they filmed it.
Kitzbuhl.A pretty town with a cable car to the alps.
Try the venison stew with dumplings.
Waidring nearby.Cable car again.
The Austrian commercial vehicle enforcement unit tend to operate 24/7.
The motorway service areas are very clean, the food is high quality but expensive.Toilets are immaculate.Pay for use and given a voucher to spend on food or drink.
Take the camera. The drive will be scenic with wooden chalets in the side of the mountains.Cows with bells on their necks.
Clean air.They are friendly people.

If your gonna transit via Germany you should have a Night Heater and fixed bed…!!

No…They don’t. :unamused:

Why? It isn’t a legal requirement in any country to have those fitted.

Are you absolutely sure about that?

Can you provide a link to something that shows what you’ve said to be credible please?

It is in Germany…night heater “O” to “O” Oktober to Ostern or as we would say in uk,October to Easter…

The bed has to be fixed if you intend stopping in a motorway services,if they catch you without a bed they’ll haul you out of the services into an industrial area or make you get a Hotel if it’s cold… :open_mouth:

I was told this by a friend of mine who lived in Germany for 15yrs,he’s recently moved back to the uk and the first thing he done when he got his first van was to brush up on the law as we all know whet the Germans are like.

I got stopped once about 4 yrs ago in Intel near Kiefersfelden when I didn’t have a bed,I was across the seats although I had my curtains around they knocked me up at about 6.30 am,I’d only been asleep since 3am ish :frowning: I spun a yarn that I’d never driven via Germany before and they were ok but they took reg number, checked paperwork, asked if I had an Eberspacher and I did then, also checked to see if I had winter tyres and I did.

Nobody mentioned sleeping in the vehicle. So if you are not intending to sleep in it, then you are not required to have them and therefore it is not a legal requirement.

I have been stopped routinely in Germany many times in vans. Not once have I been asked to show a record of hours. So that’s good enough for me.

bigvern1,

I’m asking because the Germans have a law called Fahrpersonalverordnung (AKA: FPersV) which relates to vans with a permitted GVW of 2.8t - 3.5t.

If a van is within that range of GVWs, then FPersV applies to it, even if it’s not German registered.
FPersV has a requirement for log-sheets if the vehicle isn’t fitted with a tachograph, and the rest periods must be recorded just like any of the other activities.

I’ve not seen an English version of FPersV, and I won’t use Google translate (or any other translating thingy) so I’ve given my opinion based on a personal reading of it.
I will stand to be corrected by somebody with greater knowledge though.

BTW, that’s not to say that you’re wrong in what you’ve said, because it may well be perfectly true that you’ve never been asked, however, Saaamon has made a valid point IMHO.

:bulb: It’s well known that I always say that we shouldn’t second-guess what an enforcement officer will or won’t do in a given situation, so I’ll just put that in again to save us all from excessive typing.

IMHO it would be foolish to deny the existence of FPersV, (if I’ve read it correctly) because it’s on the German statute book if they choose to enforce some/all of it.

Not denying the facts. Just don’t think there is a need to panic about it.

I’m the same as you bigvern1, I’ve been to Germany in all kinds of vehicles from vans to artics so many times that I’ve lost count, and I’ve never been asked for a log-book when I’ve been there in a van either.

I think it would be interesting to get any accurate info on the actual use of FPersV by the German enforcement authorities such as Polizei or B.A.G. from TN members’ actual experiences.
That way, folks could decide whether there is a dice before they choose whether to roll it.

Just drive through like you stole the van…You’ll be grand. :sunglasses:

That’s exactly right.
I should of re phrased it as " if your intending to sleep in your van you’ll need the following"

Whilst working for the Germans I had to fill out sheets every week noting which days I hadn’t worked…
