Followed a sainsburys artic yesterday , tandam rearsteer trailer, WHY ? where the hell do they go that warrents a rear steer , i cant help thinking they have too much money to waste. !
like Toscos, Sainsburys have Express style stores
they now own Jackson Stores
Yes Sainsburys have smaller stores in built up areas that could do with it.
But why does it worry you anyway? even if they didn’t have stores as tight as Tesco Express etc, why shouldn’t they have them.
If making the drivers job easier, and safer, is a priority for them then we should be applauding them! Certainly not questioning their actions.
Alex
Yeah they have a few of them at EK for the smaller stores, like Peebles store its handy for that store since its pretty tight.
i drive for tesco and they,re a god send when doing express’ and garages
mmm i bet if you asked the driver what would you rather have a fancy trailer or a decent wage packet , what do you reckon he or she would say ? isnt driving supposed to be hard if not they can spend a bit more and get robots , skill should mean skill .

i didn’t realise driving should be hard! What do you drive templar? If its got power steering your arguement falls down.
so whats next , remote control trailers ? at what stage do you stop becoming a skilled HGV driver and a bloke who just has to be there to hand in the paperwork , computers where the first and look what they have done to the job , .

don’t forget about the auto boxes and air con Mr B!!

I used to drive heavy haulage and my trailer used to have remote control steering on it, could get a guy to stand on the back and use it to steer the trailer in which ever direction he fancied!! And that was 5 years ago so they have been round awhile
you wouldn’t believe some places they expect you get into, hence the rear steer. It doesn’t make the driver less skilled, in fact many struggle, esp with reversing them. Have seen drivers refuse to take them out. Personally i think they are great.
I don’t normally respond like this, but what’s all this cobblers about■■?
I drive for Tesco too, and like switchlogic says, you wouldn’t believe some of the places they send us, Sorry switchlogic, don’t know who you drive for, Tesco or Sainsbury.
A few places I go to spring to mind, where, if you didn’t have a rear steer trailer, you’d never get in or out of the place.
Ilford Express, where you have to drive through the pumps, where cars normally go.
Dean Street, Soho. You have to drive up Dean Street, then turn right into Carlisle St, before turning left into Soho Square to get to the delivery point. I’ve seen it done with a rigid, and bugger me, do they struggle.
Elephant and Castle, where you have to go underground to do the delivery. One of our agency drivers took a 13 metre there by mistake one day and it took most of the afternoon and evening to extricate him.
Shall I go on.?
These trailers are used for specific delivery points where most car drivers think twice before going in.
I used to drive on agency for Sainsbury’s Elstree and Rye Park, Tesco Harlow, Arla Foods, Gist Hemel and Iceland Enfield and he’s dead right, you’d struggle to get to many deliveries without a rear steer and they are much better than rigids. Plus although never having worked for them full time I cant see any evidence that they scrimp on drivers wages to pay for new trailers! Thats just a daft accusation!
i don’t see why anyone would be against new technologies or kit that makes our life easier. i remember when i was a kid my dad moaning that his new truck, volvo f7, i think, had a airsprung drivers seat which wasn’t real trucking. got to move with the times.

No its not meant to be hard. It is an employers duty to provide tools suitable to do the job. Providing them with a rear steer “city” trailer instead of having them get extremely stressed out trying to get a normal one into a place is just common sense.
Apparently a div like you would rather have the driver blocking up the whole street for 10 minutes and getting wound up to hell struggling to get into a place instead of using kit that already exists.

I take it this is your first week in haulage? Must be because you’ve obviously never seen remote control rear steer trailers. Hell, I was using those THIRTEEN YEARS AGO.
And WTF do you think computers have done to the job?

Limeyphil is that you ?
It is quite obvious that THE TEMPLAR hasn’t done any supermarket deliveries before
Perhaps you ought to do a shift for Sainsbury’s and be given one of the more challenging jobs before passing comments.
mmm i bet if you asked the driver what would you rather have a fancy trailer or a decent wage packet
Without even knowing what you earn, I can almost guarantee you that the wages of a full time Sainsbury driver are more than you earn.

skill should mean skill .
Just to put in my 10p’s worth, why would pulling a rear-steer trailer require any less skill than pulling a conventional one? You may have a smaller turning circle, but in turn you have more rear swing on your blind side to think about. No less skill imho, in fact maybe more in some cases.
Tesco, Sailsbury Metro is a 10 meter rear steer delivery and would be hell without out the rear steer. Its the place I hate going.
