I have heard today that these are closing?? True or rdc rumorr?
I wouldn’t miss the Stoke depot…
Five hours and had to leave untipped.
Buddy of mine was in there for near on nine and wasn’t tipped.
I don’t mind Elstree but stone is a pokey old hole.

Yes it’s true, both the dedicated frozen depots are closing in arround two years to be replaced by one depot that is going to be built in the Northampton area and this is meant to provide the frozen goods cover for the whole country

Well that sounds like a plan
Used to do agency work out of Elstree, easy peasy work, but far too much paper work and stuff and some bellends in the office giving you grief because you were 5 minutes late leaving the yard
Had enough of spotty faced oiks who’ve never driven a wagon calling the shots and left.
There’ll be a fair few pished off about it closing mind.
They struggle for drivers at the Northampton DC as it is so it will be interesting to see what happens when the new frozen one opens

I don’t mind Elstree but stone is a pokey old hole.stones just smallish and a bit of an outdated poxhole, but easy enough to get turned and easy bays to get onto…mr piggy on the gate security would be the epitome of a by the book jobsworth and i wouldnt miss him…on the other hand, the older shunter is actually quite decent.plenty of hideyholes in the ind est to go for a kip and hide.plus theres a good chippy just behind the petrol station at the next roundabout.not the worst place to lie up once your out the gates.
I work at elstree and it’s true . A lot of the drivers are going to transfer to rye park or Waltham point. Quite a few are at retirement age. The warehouse are going to go to Northampton as sainsburys but transport will be run by wincanton . So that’s bad for drivers like me who would of gone to the new depot.
I did the odd bit of limping at Elstree from the 90’s onwards, office staff seemed very laid back and friendly, some good runs, some bad.
Sad to hear it’s going, but it was announced a few months ago on some logistics association website so it’s not exactly a surprise.
That will be interesting running from Northampton to the South Coast or South East Coast, timewise. A lot of frozen deliveries from Elstree are multi-drop (ie 5 or 6) and having to wait for ambient and other deliveries to be tipped at each store sees the time ticking away! Elstree has long time had grief from the houses behind (which were built after the depot!) about noise, and the top end of the yard is out of bounds at night. Large site = many houses = loadsa money!
Sainsbury’s love RDCs where the traffic is bad - Waltham Point and Dartford just two examples! Wonder who is responsible for the overall logistics plan!
The stone one is gone now,XPO are now using the place.
Worked at Elstree Chill years ago on the agency. Great little number, office bods were sound as a pound and just left you to get on with it. Just used to deliver/collect from depot to depot, no store work.
I’d still be there if they hadn’t moved the whole shebang to Waltham Point.
Worked a few shifts on Frozen and the office bods were a bunch of clueless jobsworths, job was delivering to stores which was ok, just an overload of paperwork and bull she height. Not for me.
Sad to hear the place is closing though.
Limped at Elstree, both chill & frozen, back when it was Salvesons. Always thought it was a great little job…till NFT took it over…
Surprised Wincanton have been given the new depot…considering how amazingly crap they are at everything else they do for Sainsburys. The loads they collect out of our depot…they have subbed it out to N R Evans, then another company, now they’ve taken some of it back themselves…still can’t get anywhere near their booked collection times…always 2+ hrs late.
But a lot of the top Transport people within Sainsburys seem to have a real thing about protecting them…

No it ain’t, at least it wasn’t when I clocked off at 1830 this evening
Any old hands remember Sainsbury’s Basingstoke? Used to go in there years ago (around 35?) and drivers used to say that lorries had gone into there and never been seen again!
