Things could well have changed since then, but in 1986, custom house yard (ex railway shunting yard) used to be ok.
i know i’m a bit late on this one but if he only needs to be near rome then there are a couple of very good places at orte, you can’t miss them, one is a truckstop restaraunt and the other a supermarket with a restaraunt next door, they are both practically across the road from each other and there’s also a very nice pizzaria just around the corner for the true taste of italy.
