Ha ha Dan, John will know that well enough, nothing like the bottleneck that it used to be is it! On the same road, White Meadow Straight, Bradbourne Corner, Pond Corner, The Trees, Woodeaves Chicane. Shirley Hollow on the A52 between Ashbourne and Brailsford, the Ruck of Stones on the same road, Ranch Corner on the A6, Picory Corner near Alport, the list is endless. John mentioned Markeaton Island, I see on the news that, having overspent and overtimed the existing widening, they are now considering building an underpass there and a flyover at Little Eaton! How clever is that eh?
Pete.
Air Ballon Roundabout is half way up Birdlip isn’t it?
That’s the one Clunk, it’s near The Air Balloon Pub. There was one many years ago called The Compass Roundabout near Portsmouth (Cosham I think) Charlie One will know it. Bugger, I will have to go and have a look now on Google Earth to see if it’s still there. As always I was told “you can’t miss it” but that was better instructions than “there is usually a dog sat on the corner”.
Staples Corner, Southern end of the M1 and North Circular. Named after the mattress factory but now has the office supplies place.
The Army and Navy roundabout; always on the traffic news because somebody had turned one over.
John Raymonds roundabout - A48 Bridgend.
Tater/Potato island on the A610 heading from J26 off the M1 as you come towards Western Boulevard A6514
There used to be a farm shop on the other side of the roundabout
The roundabouts gone now it’s been replaced by traffic lights

Hi Chris, can you just remind me exactly where The Army and Navy roundabout was.
Staples Corner was always being mentioned on The Jimmy Young Show traffic updates along with The Hanger Lane traffic lights and The Crooked Billet because a lorry has broken down causing long tail backs.

The Army and Navy was just east of the Britvic roundabout on the A12 ring-road; Chelmsford.
Crooked Billet: Walthamstow? So many times I did the 406 from Gant’s Hill to the Chiswick Fly-over before the M25 and all to get on the M4 before 6 in the morning.
near me is the ‘Foxhunter roundabout’,named after the pub there on the old A46 Leicester-Coventry road…except they re-named the pub the Toby Carvery but we still call it by it’s proper name
Hiya its how things were… i see chris said Army and navy just up from the Brtivic i bet he never thought he d said it that way…
i ll be honest now i d forgot about Staples corner. how could you…its as bad as forgetting Swiss cottage juction.
Muckley corner on the A5 has had a few mentions over the years…i remember one day i was going to Edmonton
i d said to the traffic bloke…ex briver… where is this place. he said just go to the Crooked billet roundabout and Blar blar blar i was in
no problem. the Hogarth on the A4. and Chiwick is easy but a land mark. Fourtune of war is on the 127 named after the pub i suppose.
i like the Tatty one where the chap sold spuds…
John
The descriptions were usually meaningless to anyone outside the local area or unless they were on anyone’s regular routes like trampers. Some might have been coincidentally duplicated locally in different parts of the country or became meaningless when the pubs or factories or landmarks that gave them their name were closed down or moved/removed by redevlopment. For example the Crooked Billet junction,Apex Corner,Minimax Corner and Gillette Corner and Sunbury Clocktower were all within a few miles of each other in West Middx. The Crooked Billet in that case being the name of the now gone pub pub at the junction of the A30 and A308 etc at Staines.None of which probably meant anything to anyone outside of the area.
