Hiya,
When doing my bit for the old Red and Rust (on three occasions) I did notice when overtaking
or being overtaken how many privateers there was with painted out BRS sheets there was lots
but I never picked a BRS trailer up with a privateer’s sheet and I’m talking before they started
to de-nationalise so the sheets were very obviously stolen the sheet bill for BRS would have
been formidable.
thanks harry, long retired. Now then, now then “H”,lets consider the other alternative to the conundrum !!! Could it be that some of the thieving Gits that BRS employed could possibly have “sold” the sheets off their motors and then rung and “reported” the theft

This sounds like a more plausible reason to me,and you were probably “■■■■■■■ because you had missed so many “sales”

Cheers Dennis.
BRS wasn’t always about having good sheets and ropes. I used to hide mine every time I came into the yard with an empty trailer just in case they got nicked by another driver. If I was given a loaded trailer with old sheets on it, I’d re-sheet it with mine, even if I had to come in early and do it in my own time. The best sheet I ever had was given to me (and charged to Bedford depot) at BRS Aberdeen when I was sent to a paper mill in Peterculter for a load to Tunbridge Wells. It covered the whole load stacked 2 pallets high including the front and rear. Plenty of ropes and my fly sheet were enough. No one ever got their hands on it until I left to come to Aus.

And how big would that fuel tank have been Larry ? 20gal no more ? So he must have just run on locals as by the looks of him he’s just a 5 day a week 8 to 5 man on “C” licence eh! Cheers Dennis.
20ton on this trailer ,ready to leave the Mill for Kent and Wor kid is just giving some newly fitted wheels a last “tweak”,well thats how we did it and we never lost any wheels/studs over the years
Cheers Bewick.
Ooh Dennis you are a potential murderer by today’s standards ,2 cracks with that bar was plenty even with my light weight !
No torque wrench in use there Dennis, just common sense tightness. I remember when I blew a front tyre onTrafford Park (ran over a steel depth peg sticking out of the sub-base and my workmate was SUPPOSEDLY watching me around it) and ATS came out and changed the tyre. Fitter got this torque wrench out and did his stuff, half an hour later on the Chapel by-pass some of the blooming nuts were rattling! ATS came out with the bollox that ‘the driver is responsible for checking the nuts’ and were not interested so I borrowed a brace and jumped on the bugger, they never came loose again!
Nowt to do with roping and sheeting of course…
Pete.

Aye I would say you are about right there Dennis, The tool box looks bigger than the fuel tank, But its a good photo of how drivers had to do the job in those good old days & took a pride in what they did, & not for fantastic wages either I must say , Regards Larry.
Hi windrush, I have to agree with all you say and typical response from ATS, you cannot beat jumping on a bar and getting a couple of good cracks !!
Cheers Leyland 600.

I also agree with what you say, A jump or two on the bar and a couple of cracks, Job done, I was a long distance driver all my life, And was an owner driver and ran a small family set up for 28 years and we never had any problems with wheels coming loose, Of course we allways carried a wheel brace and a jack, Drivers don’t have any gear in to-days rules & regs, In fact I was told that a driver cant change a wheel under the new HAS Laws that are now in force, Oh dear Oh dear is it OK for me to get out of bed & put the kettle on & make a nice cup of Ringtons tea, I hope Im not breaking the bloody law because Ive not done the DCPC, well I don’t give a ■■■■■ anyway, Regards Larry.

Looks as if part of that photo is missing, Dennis ? Something you do not want us to see ?
I cannot think what it might be, because I know the back end ropes and sheets will have been spot on ?
Regards. John.
that’s only an acceptable practice if your kid brothers the correct weight

Whats the job come to,waiting ages for a tyre fitter when you can have the job done with a jack w/brace and bar.Glad im retired.
regards dave.
Within a couple of years or so from when I started we stopped carrying spare wheels on the trailers, as all the units had twin tanks,I can never recall ever one of the artics having a puncture and needing the spare off the trailer carrier. However, the last thing I wanted was a driver jacking a motor up on the roadside or anywhere else for that matter so they didn’t carry a jack just a wheel brace for checking wheel nuts if required. The last thing I wanted was one of the motors sat on the hub eh! On the very isolated occaision we had a tyre failure I was quite happy for one of the Tyre firms to go out and fit a new Michelin first choice or a Bridgestone second, never allowed them to fit any “■■■■■■ tyres as they would if you didn’t bother,I have on a number of occaisions told the tyre fitter to ■■■■ off and I’ll get someone else out!! Oh! “sorry Boss yes we have a Michelin sorry thought we didn’t have any in stock” My arse!! then when the unit or trailer appeared back at base me or our tyre fitter in later years would remove the new case and replace it with a similar one to the others on the axle.I could write a book on my life with Tyres !! Cheers Bewick.
