Theres a sight for sore eyes, one of D & D’s Trader 6 wheelers loaded to the “Gunnels”,used to see them rolling through Kendal in very early 60’s with the same kind of loads on,Jute I think they carried and I heard that the G’uvnor was a woman, don’t know how true this was ? Cheers Bewick.
I was with them for a few years but had served my “Apprenticeship” with Allison’s Transport long before that anyway I had a D 1000 with V8 ■■■■■■■ then my Dodge with V8 perkins loved both of them then she gave me her first Volvo F 86 … I used to do multi drops to the Sth West starting about Bristol then on through Somerset /Dorset Wiltshire and Hamps sometimes up to 25 /30 drops then shoot over to the Metal Box in Neath and load back home but often used to load Norton Motorbikes out of Andover through Fluens Trans … great days great days … the boss was a lady Minty Dolan great to work for in the early days ( before me ) her husband Stan used to co run the place hence D & D Dolan & Dolan she paid well I used to get a laugh when handing in the running sheets with a quick look at them she would say in broad Dundonian…" em gonna hae te draw on meh savin’s te pey you laddies this week "
back to Roping and sheeting … you had to learn fast with these loads thats for sure
During the seventies would go into Edinburgh in the morning and handball 20 pallets of Heinz,s at whichever cash and carry then back to ICI grangemouth and rope and sheet maybe 10 trailers with 60 pallets of 5 gallon drums on each of them, and think nothing of it.
Could,nt do it now, well i could but would probably end up in A&E.
How you miss the good times eh!

Hey Mike, It’s a Dutchman , but yes some sheeted here and if you drove behind them it was like a parachute.
But normally we had cables under the sheets but…
if we got the first roundabouts here you could see everywhere peaces of chipboard on roundabouts because of losing loads. Pitty no pics taken. And the worst were the ones who thought you could jump over them; Nice to see them in the middle of the roundabout wheels in the mud.
Cheers Eric,

Nearest I could find to Mikes trailer ! I just bet that when the Ponsonsby driver pulled his sheets off in Soho at his drop he would have a right battle to wrap them up proper like Probably did as I would have done, just “happed” them up roped them on then do them properly somewhere he could spread them out.As long as he didn’t turn up back at the yard with them in a state eh!Cheers Dennis.
