Hi all, I am no expert but I bet when it rains the load gets wet,the Fly sheet should be over the headboard am I correct.Paul

hiya,
Tidy enough but why create a tent at both ends, is the sleeper raining in??,
I bet that flysheet did a bit of flapping when full steam ahead.

Tell you the truth that was the only time I used a fly sheet that way, it was one of those, I wonder if I did it this way moments.
If those are paper reels stood on end directly onto the platform there is a very good chance that all the bottom ones will end up wet should a heavy shower of rain be encountered during the journey, The platform should have been sheeted down below to chock rail level with the main sheet and over the headboard to effectively seal out any water which would seep down the trailer due to capilliary atraction effectivly wetting the bottom reels where they are in contact with the trailer bed. The rear empty space at the rear of the trailer should also have been covered similarly although any water at the back is unlikely to run forward if the trailer has a slight incline to the front. The flysheet should then have been fitted overall to deflect the bulk of the rain water away from the main sheet seams and keep it relatively dry. It should also have been fitted verically down the back of the reels and as near to the back end of the trailer as possible to prevent water blowing in underneath. I can see a claim looming for wet damage with this load !!
Cheers Leyland 600.
maybe it was not raining that day an the guy wanted to keep the flies away hence the fly sheet, lol. paul

hiya,
Ah’ at last someone who doesn’t need to enrol at my R & S academy,
Leyland 600 are you looking for a start on my teaching staff,
thanks harry, long retired.
Well I must agree, not the best way to sheet a load of reels, unless it didnt matter if they got wet as in some cases if they were for making paper bags ? the manufacturer stored them outside like one of the drops we used to do Simms at Thornliebank , but having said that the security at Blyth Harbour would not have let you off the dock sheeted in that manner, so there you go ? Regards Larry.
Heres the same type of load reels on end, Regards Larry.
larry , 20 lashes if that is a fly sheet you roped over , if it was a bottle sheet all is forgiven . we really need dennis here to pass judgement don’t we ? cheers , dave . very tidy all the same

What a ■■■■■■■ mess that is !!By the looks of it there was enough length in the two main sheets to cover both ends of the empty platform( well not all the back end as water dosen’t run up-bank) and still have plenty of overlap on the load, then the fly sheet could have covered the main sheets from just over the top of the headboard, down onto the platform and would still have covered so far,if not all the way down the back end of the reels, and nothing would have got wet ! I bet that motor was hauling another 3 or 4 ton of wind resistance when it was underway.Well thats how I would have done it,other lads have other equally similar ideas.Cheers Dennis.
A heavy load of reels about to leave the Milnthorpe depot,I think the reason I took this shot was this was a new set of Regentex main sheets which we tried an odd time over the years but they weren’t a success as they started to lose their proofing too quickly.Although they were a somewhat cheaper sheet than our standard TCS rip-stop material the risk of getting a load wet was too great so we didn’t go any farther than “trying them” a few times.
Hi Harry, Yes I will join your staff at the R&S academy but only if you supply the “keen ointment” as no doubt you do not approve of gloves. !!! Cheers L 600.

Have you got bad eyesight Dave or what? If thats a bottle sheet on Larry’s motor I’m a Dutchman !! He should have given his lad a bollocking for roping over the fly sheet, having said that he probably did and made him tidy it up but then again they were probably in a hurry so it had to go like that !!! Gonna disappear up my own arse in a minute phew ! Cheers Dennis.P.S. But on closer inspection there dosen’t look to be any rope under the fly and over the mains, the plot thickens !!
