IIRC Larry that particular load consisted of either 4 or 5 drops for London and Kent and was different shapes and weights. The Driver was my first employee and he went on to become our Operations Director in later years. Apart from sticking a rope around the front of a load or the backend we never roped over a fly sheet, maybe on the odd occasion but in 99:9 % of cases the fly sheets were never roped over ! All the best Dennis.
Interesting advert Dean, but youâd think that âindustry professionalsâ would not show such ignorance in the way their sheets should be used, never mind the fact that âif it gets wetâ itâs too late to cover it, it needs to be dried out, not have the damp locked in.

I agree with your comments DavidâŚOnly a silly â â â â â â â would have written and designed this advert. Cheers, Ray.
Can there be that many tarp makers/repairers left nowadays ? I know that Dobie Wyatt from Cadley in Marlborough forest are still going but it looks like most of their work is fitting and repairing tipper roll covers(is that what they are called)?

There was a company in Basingstoke as well
One of our trailers has curtains made by them and that was 5 years ago
Donât know whether theyâre still going

I expect the Basingstoke company is John M. Carter and Sons. Been in business for over 150 years and still going strong. They manufacture and hire marquees as well as making sheets, tarpaulins, trailer/body curtains and bespoke coverings.
The marquee business has taken a bit of a hit during these Covid times but, the other side of the business hasnât really been affected.
Hi All
Carters Tilts & Tarpaulins in Basingstoke
There is a chap in Poole makes them also I cant think of his name he makes a lot for the Fair ground boys.
I use David Leech in Liverpool also for curtains as they space the buckles so that they dont come over the wheel arches.
Re sheet suppliers and repairers. By pure coincidence this snippet was published in the archives column of the local Penrith district weekly newspaper yesterday, I guess you will know where the Stoneybeck Inn is on the A6 2 miles north of Penrith. Stuarts supplied many â â â â â â â â hauliers back in the 1960s & 70s.
Cheers, Leyland 600.
With a name like Jobby Ostle he deserves to be celebrating his 115th birthday in the pub today. I wonder what he thought when he found it shut, or only open for takeaways ?

When Jobby drove the van for Stuart Canvas in the 80âs he used to call to deliver and collect sheets at our depot in Milnthorpe and yes he was a real Character ! He must only have weighed about 7 stone " wet through" and it was quite a grafting job â â â â â â â sheets into and out of a double wheeled â â â â â â . When Jobby retired his van was taken over by another Penrith chap called Frank James another great lad. Jobby used to sometimes ride shotgun with Frank and for a few Christmasâs I always gave Frank a few quid for him to buy Jobby a pint in the Stonebeck which was Franks local as well. We still have the heavy PVC sleeve for our whirly gig washing line which Frank had made for us back in the early 90âs so it will be approaching the 30 year old mark ! When Anne asks me to âput the whirly gig upâ It always reminds of Frank & Stuart Canvas and I always fold it up nicely and place it out of harms way !! Happy days Cheers Bewick.
Whereâs the MODS when they are needed ! âCrimeâ Hacking into other members photos and defacing them ! The same Individual has probably scrawled on the back of every Bog door he has ever visited Oh! well Iâm just glad I removed the Bewick thread to avoid just such graffiti being inflicted by âPeanut brainersâ but I shouldnât mock the âInflictedâ as they canât help it can they ?

Hard luck Lads I just bet this confirmatory shot has spoiled your [zb] day ! Cheers Dennis.
Pure class that Dennis definitely my favourite lorry to grace your fleet
Hiya Gaz,
Hope you and yours are keeping well ! Yes those were the last two British units I bought in 1984 and I can say they were a vast improvement on the Sed/Atks we ran in previous years. Their specs were 8LXC/Fuller 95909/Rockwell axle and they gave excellent ,reliable, service and were liked by their Drivers IIRC. All the Best Dennis.
