Definitely not one of your better ideas JT to put those shots on the Professional site, thereâs enough bad news circulating on there without you causing further grief as it might well be the âlast strawâ if the industry had to return to handball, sheets and ropes!! Donât ya just love it!! I do !! Cheers Dennis.
Dennis I found some more
1st wagon TK bedford, next 2 commerâs and Albionâs

Serious comment now Johnnie, the front Riever was one of A.D. Boyes 3 motors they operated at the time circa 61/62 and was driven by the elder of the two sons,Robbie RIP,I new him from been a toddler and have done many miles in the passenger seat when he drove a Trader in the 50âs.This shot,I believe, was taken en route from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to a Timber merchant in Whitehaven. All handballâd on immaculatley ! the Reiver behind was delivering to the same place and was,I believe, driven by Tyson Burridge.Cheers Dennis.
Dennis the picture is out of a book I will find it out and if there is any more to the write up I will let you know
cheers Johnnie

Youâve made my day Johnnie!! I thought youâd never have noticed !!Cheers Dennis.
Like you Harry I would,nt know where to start with a curtainsider but I reckon I could still sheet a load of Big S soap powder out Marchon even though its been 40 years this year since I had a wagon that needed sheeting. Powder tankers then buses and coaches since then.
Cheers , Leyland 600.
Hi Dennis, That photo of RWB and THB was taken by myself in late summer 1963 when I was riding shotgun with the late RWB albeit with my right leg in plaster having suffered a broken leg.The load was about 3 1/2 standards of floorboarding on each wagon from Tyne Dock to Jacksons Sawmills at Whitehaven, weighing about 13 1/2 ton each load. Tysons Riever 51 CRM was his original one and this is the only photo that exists of this wagon, of course I have provided him with copies etc. Did you know that RWB won the LDOY roping and sheeting contest in 1970 & 71. I will post a photo.
Regards Leyland 600.

Well you find summat out every day L600 ! I bet it was gay uncomfortable riding passenger in that Reiver with a broken leg !! I do re-call reading that RWB had won a S & R competition, this would be when he had the D1000 artic I think. He sure was a master of the art of sheeting and roping and a lot quicker than most I guess. We often delivered loads of timber to Jacksonâs in the 70âs and 80âs but we brought our loads from the Thames.Anyhow, come on L600,get a few more shots onto the thread of some of your marras motors that ran out of West â â â â â â â â â â years ago !! Cheers Dennis.PS IIRC this was a load of timber en-route to Jacksonâs,Coach Road,Whitehaven.Shot standing in the depot at Milnthorpe.
Hi Dennis, as promised here is a cutting from a transport journal of the day kept in RWâs album. Cheers L600

Its easier if you know what your doing too ,tidy job.We had sheets that had rips and tears in them ,bits of plastic banding as ties too short for some loads and like you hinted at odd shaped loads thrown in,the worst were empty end caps on pallets which were falling off whilst loading As soon as you set off the first bump and the ropes went slack ,i eventually just took them off the pallets and stacked `em up no sheet required but handball on and off
I thought it missed one offâŚ
b.waddy, no I was the â â â â â â â â company, the two companies occassinaly got mixed up with folk from Yorkshire ringing me up while I was out on school playing hell wantint to know why the coach they had booked to take them from Heckmondwike to Barnoldswick had not turned up. Momentarily I had a minor panic thinking that I had forgotten to put a booking in the diary until the penny dropped who they were looking for. Here is a photo of the two companies parked alongside each other a Skipton one day, at departure time I had half a load of Yorkshire kids and the Hckmondwike company had half a load of â â â â â â â â pensioners on board. Fortunately both companies can laugh about these matters as every time we meet there is confusion. Unfortunately my coach was not my normal livery at the time as the leopard shown was in the livery of Bicknells of Goldmalding.
Cheers , Leyland 600.
HI L EYLAND 600 .I worked for P&O LLOYD .OF NORTH WALES we ran a few leopards plaxton proper coaches .happy days Barry Waddy
Hi Leyland 600. I worked for W.C. Standerwick and drove a lot of Leopard Plaxtons on the Blackpool or Burnley to London run, also the Atlantean Gay Hostess. I also drove AEC Plaxtons for Batty Holt Continental tours in 1965.
I then worked on tankers for thirty years and after reading all the posts about roping and sheeting I must now admit, 13 years after I retired, that I was never a proper motor wagon driver having never roped or sheeted in my life.
I admire the drivers who can rope and sheet tidily but they are now few and far between. Itâs not often I see a sheeted load when I am on the road nowadays.
