Morning all,
At a quick glance, the iveco cabs were : “Tec” narrow cab with cab wings produding out. “Star” full width cab, up to edge of the wings.
Early models “Turbo Tec” and “Turbo star” later of course came the “Euro Tec” and “Euro Star”. In my time with them I only recall the TS 12612 twin splitter box, not to say before that they used something else.
I can see why some drivers prefered the Volvo box but but I could change a Splitter faster than a Volvo and only needed the clutch to pull away and to stop, great gearbox but not to everyones taste.
Hard hat on !!!

Nice photo of a Sam Longson ERF giving it some wellie. I can’t remember when the name changed to Hanson.

1Blundell & Rimmer Haulage Contractors Ltd were from Burscough working mainly out of Liverpool
delivering fruit & veg as well as being potatoe merchants,

Their livery was strikingly similar to R. A. Larkin Transport Ltd below of nearby Knowsley who
were also in the same game transporting fruit and veg.

Are Blundell and Rimmer still operating Paul? I’m sure they were going in the 60s?

I can’t remember when Longson became Hanson either chris , early 80s at a guess . I used to annoy their drivers as they had 265Rollers in them and I had a 290 ■■■■■■■ , they were fast ( 80 plus ) but I could keep up with them and fly past them on the hills . I once ran with one with a tipper trailer from Buxton to ICI Wilton in 2hrs 35 minutes , I don’t think we dropped below 70 mph except for the junctions . Oh to be young and barmey again ! Dave

Aye , Sammy had a load of QLs on spreading and a couple with flat bodies , I never got the chance to work there as I had a huge falling out with his tm when he nearly hit me cutting a corner and tried to blame me . I offered to sort it out man to man but he ■■■■■■ off quick , that was the end of my chances .

Ha ha,aye, spoilt yer chances there then.
I was at back of a Sam Longson 8-legger in a queue at that NCB crossing at Hirwaun top of Glyneath, would be 1970 as I had a MK3 Mammoth Major. We both got out, having a ■■■ and a natter, and he were telling me they stayed in digs in Merthyr and landlady locked up at 10-30pm so they used to park a loaded 8-legger under a bedroom window, climb on top and get in if it were after hours. Now whether it’s rayt or not I don’t know but one driver,a late arrival, shifted loaded wagon and shoved an empty underneath so when they got back ■■■■■■ from t’pub they fell int empty wagon. Sound about rayt Dave I suppose, just one of several pranks played by drivers when it were a proper job eh?

That was a true story Chris , they were a wild bunch back then . I think they all got banned out of Merthyr not long after . They used Hay on Wye after and there were many battles with the locals over women , there were at least two mothers with pregnant daughters banging on Sammy’s office door , one of the guilty drivers lived on our road and he was terrified in case his wife found out . We used to do the same work and used the same digs but of course I was pure and innocent and wouldn’t dream of getting involved with such goings on .

I used to see H C Davis’ wagons when I were on neets at MFS.We did Leicester and Corby and H C Davis artics were regulars ont road between Market Harborough and Corby, usually with loads like the one in the photo, tubes out of the old Stewart and Lloyd mill.

Morning Chris,
I think H C Davies controlled a lot of the loads out of Corby, must have devastated that town when the works alone closed not taking into account the Iron ore quarries etc, Cheer’s Pete

he still does nearly all the steel work out of corby as far as i know ,i drove for him from about 1982 to 88 and i was his transport manager from about 1988 to 1991 ,they still roll tube there , and more money is thrown at corby than i like to think of, they have a dedicated rail line from kettering to corby,a crackin dual carriageway to get there , and the town centre is being rebuilt .
noahs ark was the first c series with the L10 engine he had , i had b105mju which came in the next lot, they all had l10 250’s apart from b723lju which had an l10 290

Hi tony.
There was a haulier from Peterborough area in BSC Corby who did a lot of the steel out of there and also a tanker firm from Orton Longueville that ran out of the by products plant to BSC Chemicals at Orgreave Sheffield. Where does the steel for rolling come from? South Wales? It would be a shame for all the lot to close,I always liked going there to load, you could load the crude benzene on days and afters shift which was handy ………….saying no more. :grimacing:

You’re thinking of pc howard from kingscliffe, he jacked it years ago. The coil used to come from redcar , i started there when br went on strike and we went up there on nightshift to bring it back.
Where the furnaces and that were is now an industrial estate.

Did Longsons run a night shift to Llanwern Dave? When I was on either a Ross or later,a Chepstow trunk I used to see one or two heading homewards, early 80s.
Yes,of course you would be a God-fearing,pure and innocent lad like misen. I can just see the locals in Hay on Wye coming to terms with “Limestone Cowboys”,I’ll bet the bookshops closed early.
I have to say that was one of my favourite runs back to Sheffield on a Saturday from Swansea, through Hay and then Tenbury Wells to Kiddy and then M5 at Quinton and home.

Llanwern didn’t run a night shift Chris , so they would most likely have been to Cardiff Steel who worked 24/7 a job which we took over in the late 80s . Very handy if you’d had a day off for the dentist or something , you could do one after tea and be home in bed at midnight . I’ll bet you couldn’t do that now with half the roads shut at night .

I got a lift from Tinsley to Gleadless Townend Sheffield late one Friday night with a Sam Longson driver Dave. It was 1976 and I’d log booked it from Swansea, left me Mandator at AEC agents with a u/s compressor.I got to Tinsley courtesy of a Burtons the Tailors trunker from Leeds and was just about to go for a night service bus into town when I heard this wagon coming from Rotherham direction.I put log book up and lad stopped, took me to Gleadless via Shepcote Lane and Prince of Wales Road, then he could get to Chapel/Buxton via Homesfield and Owler Bar.He’d tipped at SPT or maybe Parkgate, one of em anyway,8-legger ERF with 180 I’m sure. You can’t go to Owler Bar via Homesfield now I don’t think, not with a wagon anyroad.

7.5 limit now have to go via beauchief lights and back up

They put the weight limit on Holmsfield years ago Chris , in the early 2000s we were delivering bricks and blocks to a new site down there and the local protesters were out in force reporting us to the police for daring to disturb their peace . Eventually the coppers pulled us at Owler Bar , checked our notes and that was that . Incidentally it’s amusing to see all the posh motors pull up at the carvery at Owler Bar all come for their £5 99 Sunday dinner , it’s amazing how much they can pile on a plate .

You can still go via Totley though phop? And also via Ecclesall Road and Stoney Ridge Road and down Froggatt Edge?
I’ve been left Sheffield for 12 years so lose touch.

I know where you mean Dave, aye, the tight chuffs from S10 and S11.
The Grouse Inn above Froggatt Edge at Longshaw was a farm and a pub when I were a kid and I used to go at weekends and school holidays int 40s and 50s.In later years a bloke called Mark Fletcher kept it and he had a tipper but I don’t know who he worked for.
I used to hang ont back of Hughes Brothers/Derbyshire Stone/Hinchcliffes/Ben Bennett etc tippers and get pulled up Froggatt Edge on me bike.Mind you I were choked to death wi fumes.

the last time I used Froggatt Edge with a wagon was 1986,I was on MFS at Maltby and did Manchester and Hanley on nights, come back via Axe Edge and Buxton.

Yes Chris, that route is still OK. It is only Owler Bar to Low Edges that has a weight limit. It came in after I finished driving in 2002, now as Phop says it is right at Beaucheif, right again at the next island and up to the Meadowhead-Bradway road if you want to head for the ring road and M1.

Pete.

Nice to see one of J.Johnstone’s on here. They used to ship via Poole alot and always run smart
motors.
