RIP George Fardell

Sad news that George Fardell passed away on Thursday evening at a nursing home in Exmouth.

George drove for Asian Transport in 1972, then Iran Container Company, OHS and Promotor.

He was a larger than life character with a great sense of humour and a good heart and will be much missed by his friends and colleagues.

RIP George Fardell, I did not know you, but you were a driver and its still very sad…

I can only remember speaking to George once at The National Hotel in Belgrade when he was driving for Promotors in 1980.
I wondered what he was up to as he seemed to be hanging around the back of a couple of British trailers that were parked there so I went over to have a word with him. He had a large Bowie knife hanging down from the belt of his khaki shorts so I was quite relieved when he spoke English and it turned out to be his trailer.
I asked him why he was wearing two wristwatches, he told me that one was always on Rhodesian time and he mentioned about his time in B.S.A.P. the British South African Police during the bush wars. I am not sure if he was wearing a B.S.A.P. issue bush hat or a leather slouch hat at the time.
I had been in Rhodesia a couple of times the year before so we had a bit of a chat before George had to shoot off as we going in different directions but I also remember seeing George coming out of the Zagreb customs yard on another occasion.
I have a feeling that George knew about the Trucknet site and I always thought that it was such a shame that George never came on here and shared some of his experiences with us as I am sure that he would of had some very interesting stories to tell, which will now be lost for ever.

Rest In Peace, Mzungu.

I’ll post his funeral arrangements on here. It would be great if any of the old comrades could attend though it will be in that far flung part of the British Empire known as Devon!

The other two drivers in the photo are Steve Trybowski and Mad Michel plus girlfriend.

Owing to illness in George’s immediate family, they have decided on a private cremation. However there will be a memorial service in a month or two’s time and I’ll post further details on here.
