Very nice article with loads of historical pictures about the McBean outfit which ran ERFs for years, in yesterday’s issue of Commercial Motor. There’s a great pic of their 5MW engaged on a bit of heavy haulage. Robert
Looks like a NZ rigid 3MW to me. Robert
There’s a photo of KJH 964P in gf livery on ebay at the moment, search m20 truck photos erf gf

Yep, I’ve seen it but I never put 'em on here until they’re sold - just in case! Robert
There are some great Peter Davies photos on CM’s Biglorryblog this week, including this splendid ERF with a 5MW cab! Robert

Here it is. Robert

A LHH 5MW
Great pic! That’s a 4MW cab though . By sheer coincidence I put another shot of one with a 6MW cab on the Leicester thread this morning! Robert

The above lorry is also a 6MW, by my reckoning- it has 5" lamps and was registered after that date in 1973 that I have forgotten Please correct me, if I am wrong.

Well spotted! And yes, I believe you are on to the case here. However, the 1973 date you refer to was the exact change over from 3MW to 5MW (ie 18th Jan 1973): by sheer coincidence the last 3MW was despatched on the same day that the first 5MW was despatched.
However the 4MW and 6MW overlapped by some considerable time (probably to use up parts). The 4MW ran from Nov '68 to Jan '74; and the 6MW ran from May '72 to Oct '74. This info was kindly provided by ‘ERF’ the archive man some time ago. Robert

I had forgotten that. However, the 6MW you put on the Leicester thread is on the “R” (August 1976- July 1977). Sorry to be an insufferable pedant, yet again.

Heavens no! Not an ‘insufferable pedant’: you remain one of the treasured few who help to keep these archival threads in trim with your eye for detail. I was recently accused of ‘nit-picking’ on another thread, only for performing the task that you are now doing!
You are right, of course, and I might have been inclined to suppose that ‘RAN …R’ in the Leicester fleet was a re-registered quirk; but there were others! For example, UGE 852R of Pountains fame started life with a similar 6MW cab.
If you remember, our helpul member, ‘ERF’, kindly furnished us with detailed information gleaned from his archivist colleague, but then proceeded to update the info as things progressed. At the time I cut and pasted much of this, along with PMs he send to me, where it had relevance to the books I was writing about the NGC model. So it is just possible that I haven’t kept his last thoughts about the 6MW. They may be on one of these labarynthine ERF threads somewhere! So it is possible that '76, rather than '74 is the last date for 6MWs.
The other possibility is that the '74 to '76 version might be the illusive 8MW cab. ‘ERF’ found mentions of the 8MW but it didn’t fit anywhere.
I’m afraid I’ve not really kept my eye on the ball with the set-back cab because it didn’t quite fit my mission to complete the NGC history. But we’ll get there in the end!
Cheers, Robert
