Hello, I am been thing about applying to become a Retained Firefighter, but I have had an after thought, by being a full-time hgv driver will I not be able to do it because of my drivers hours? or is the Fire service exempted, but my normal paid job not?

Simple answer; whilst the fire service is exempt from EU drivers hours rules, your duty time as a retained fire fighter cannot be counted as ‘rest’ under EU rules as you are not ‘free to dispose of your time.’ It was for this reason that many brigades stopped full (or part) time drivers from becoming retained fire fighters.
