Researching Hgv Driving, What are expected working hours?

Hello guys,

My first post here so please bear with me.

Iv looked at Hgv Driving as a career change, driving artics is what I’m interested in. Be that hauling containers doing length of the country runs or multi drops for supermarkets and companies.

Can you guys let me know what realistic total hours spent at work would be a working week?

I have read both roles have different hours associated to them.

Many thanks in advance.

containers expect long waits at drops for them to empty the container think they have a 3 hour window before they start charging the customer drumage.

sumpermarkets this is my experience of Iceland can get 1 to 2 runs a day the worst was one run 4 stores or 2 runs 2 stores on each or easiest is trunking to other depots or supplier collections. some of are drivers just want the basic 45 hours and then there is me look for a minimum of 55 hours but will do every hour I can best was 74 hours on a 6 day week. we are not pushed we get given the run and left to get on with it and they don’t care as long as the time windows are meet.

general haulage expect rdc work sitting on your ■■■ for hours on end waiting to be tipped.

Thanks alliepallie, so driving to yards, warehouses and factories are gona be a lot longer hours?

50-60 hours per week.

If youre doing "length of the country runs" thatll be nights out too. Start 05hr00 Monday finish 16hr00 Friday, maybe Saturday morn sometimes. Shop deliveries maybe 07hr00 to 16hr00 daily?
Road transport is a very varied beast.

Edit to add. Be careful when discussing working hours and pay etc.
You may start work at 05hr00, and finish at 20hr00. Other folk may say youve done 15hrs work, but you wont always get paid that. Depending on contracts, breaks, POA etc, you may be paid through you may not. Many of that days hours may be paid, but not count towards WTD hours, even discussing hours gets many of us talking at cross purposes.
