I should also add that I have never heard of having to take your test again for the reason you state.
New drivers passing for the first time now have their driving licence revoked if they gain six or more points within the first 2 years after passing. This is the only rule I know with a rule mentioning 2 years. Even then, it is after the first pass, in whatever type of vehicle that may be, so there isn’t another 2 year period after an LGV pass in other words.
i wonder if he doesn’t see his entitlement for class 1 because he doesn’t have a valid medical.
I have heard mentioned on here and in other places where people have let things lapse for what ever reason then apply for a new photo card/license and catagories they previously held have been removed
Hi There,
Yes you are right, entitlements is what i meant. I let it run out, [the HGV bit] by not having the medical when i was 45. I am 62 now and wondered if i could get it back by doing the medical. I have seen stuff on here about the DVLA saying they have no records, but i still have the duplicate form from when i booked my test in 1988, and i still have my old green licence with my HGV entitlement on it. I was supposed to send that back when i did my bike test, but forewarned is forearmed, so i said i could not find it. My HGV entitlement ran out in 2007, so that should still be on the system… [I hope!]
john78, given that you had entitlement as recently as 2007, I would think it would be a simple case of ordering a D2/D4 pack, getting the medical done and sending off both forms. Hey presto.
When you look online you may very well not be able to see entitlement, but they should know you had it before and haven’t had it revoked for any reason.
Just checked on the licence checker thing and it says my licence as a whole has expired, last september■■?
How can this be?? I understood a photocard licence lasted for ten years, i have not had it ten years and not had a letter to tell me to renew it either…
It was issued on the 10th of July 2024 [I passed my bike test a few days before] so how can it be run out early??
My most recent experience with the DVLA is that they are finally answering the phone again.
The number for driving licences is 0300 790 6801 and a call on Monday morning may well be
your best next move.
I can assure you that you never lose the right to renew your HGV licence after passing the HGV medical, unless you’re using some online licence checker that I’m not aware of the online licence checker only shows what vehicles you are entitled to drive, clearly you are not entitled to drive a HGV until you’ve passed the medical.
As you’ve been told that the HGV licence is on your records you should not have a problem renewing the entitlement to drive a HGV.
I was off the lorries for over 20 years and my HGV entitlement was not on my licence for several years but I was able to renew it after passing the HGV medical.
It would be interesting to see what you’ve seen on the Internet that suggests that you have to retake a test after 2 years, could you post a link ?
No, what i mean is, it was my first ever photocard licence. The date i passed my bike test is on it, that is why they issued a new licence. I did my bike test 10 years ago in july, but my licence states it expires last september. I will try to post photos later…
I can see where they say that if your LGV licence expired more than 2 yrs ago you need to renew DCPC and retake a practical test.
Since the DCPC lasts 5 years that is clearly ■■■■■■■■.
I can`t see anywhere on the gov site that says anything about needing to renew your entitlement for LGVs.
Even if you voluntarily surrendered your licence because of a medical condition (not your case) I can’t see a retest is needed even then. No mention of 2 years anywhere I can see.
Get a medical and send off the forms, if you really do need to take another test you will find out soon enough!
On here you can clearly see the issue date, and the expiry date. So, either my licence is faulty, or EVERYTHING you have ever read that says that a photo driving licence lasts for ten years is plainly wrong… ummm, how do i add my photo of licence??
To upload a photo:
In box you are typing into there are some grey icons. The 6th one is an “up” arrow, click on that, and it should be follow the prompts.
No, after my hgv ran out i had the paper licence until i did my bike test in 2014. That was when i had no choice but get a plastic one. I will try to put a photo now.
