Renault Premium CD Player

Due to the lack of Ipod/MP3 connectivity on the standard Renault head unit, I contacted my local dealer to get a price on their unit with the aux-in/usb on it as a direct replacement. I got a shock when they quoted nearly £600 for the new head unit and wires, plus the truck would need to be booked into the workshop so the ECU could be updated to accept the new unit, at yet more cost.

Does anyone know if I could just replace the head unit with an aftermarket one (most probably a sony one), and if so, will I still be able to use the Renault steering wheel controls etc? I have seen one on the sony website for £130 and it has aux-in, usb and bluetooth making it a much cheaper and probably better alternative. Many thanks.

Just stick one in from Halfords but you’ll need a dropper as there usually 24v in the premium

Get a pure highway DAB radio - it has a built in transmitter that finds an empty FM channel and sends its signal to the trucks radio. It also has aux input so you can plug your ipod etc into it. I have one with a magmount aerial on the roof and it works great - and the best part is I can use it in my car as well!
I also drive a premium so know that it works.
Good luck

That sounds like it could be a good choice. Its only a hire truck (long term) I’ve got so it might be better than swapping head units. I’m not an audiophile, but I do like decent sound quality. Is the Pure Highway ok on sound quality?

I’ve got one of these and it’s excellent

I personally have not used the aux but find the radio sound quality ok,better than some of the cd’s actually which can sound a bit flat.

If you do get a highway then do yourself a favour and get a mag mount aerial as already said. I put mine up above the passenger door on the roof, tuck the wire behind the top marker light and through the passenger door. I found I needed to buy an extension wire to reach the highway.

£600 eh,phew!

The sound quality is very good - DAB is a lot clearer than some of the channels on AM i.e talksport, 5 live etc. There are also channels that are not available on FM/AM widening your choice even further. I have one of these dabonwheels.co.uk/Kinetic_Ma … erial.html on the roof and the cable fits behind the door rubber and only takes 5 mins to install/remove. Like I said before you can easily move it from one vehicle to another and also plug in your ipod etc.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I might just go for claretmatt’s recommendation. I’m not really one for listening to the radio, just tunes from my MP3 player. So I reckon the Pure Highway might be an expensive way of doing things. The little Belkin thing looks like it should do the job. Thanks once again.
