A shot taken in Belgium of my maternal Grandfather Dickinson Oliver who was a Corporal Farrier in the 1/1st Northumberland Hussars during WW1 the horse he is riding was called Tango and apparently when the Cavalry was disbanded this horse along with thousands others were shipped to Palestine and were never to be returned to Blighty ! My Grandfather was a village Blacksmith all his working life in Hexham, Capheaton and finally in Ireby ■■■■■■■■■■■ He retired in 1955 and passed away in 1960. He was also a great churchman ( C of E) and served for many years as The Peoples Church Warden at St James’s Church in Ireby. My recollection of him is a bit distant but I can just remember him in the forge with his long leather type of apron and then on Sunday mornings dressed in his dark blue suit with trilby and carrying his gloves a right dapper little fella but that’s how I remember him RIP Grandad Oliver ! Cheers Bewick.

My brother…joined the Scots Guards at 17 I still have all his letters written home to my mother right up until couple of days before crossing the Channel the last two opened and checked by censor, also the notice from the War Office of reported missing and some weeks later identification notice of his death and in later months/years correspondence from surviving members of his troop who where with him. He had taken a direct mortar hit.

Thanks to S.D.U. and to Toshboy for the replies.
I remember my mother-in-law telling me that Bill named his bike after her, Emily.
