Yes, Ive noticed quite a lot of firms drop staff just before Christmas and having been through redundancy once, I truly feel for the lads and lasses who are up the road through no fault of their own.
I used to work at Staveley Chemicals/ Ronnie Plonkers/ Rhodia Eco Services, I was there 20 years then told thats it! Funny thing was when the boss had gone, on the radio was
“Dont Give Up” by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.
After I got back to my (now) wife I rang my dad and bawled my eyes out.
At previous redundancy scares I learned that redundancy kills!
2 people died from natural causes but I believe that stress killed them.
I hope Santa gets them jobs
when they fly past everything in lane 3 at 70mph.
Whilst minding my own business on the limit on the A120 today I had one go rattling past.

On the issue of legality, If every operator was scrutinised down to every last nut and bolt none of them would be 100% legal.

Possibly but let’s not forget here that many of the liveried motors were Subbies paid a lttle more to run in Reid colours
Yes, it’s usually a disaster all round, when companies go under, like this.
They leave behind them, so many casualties.
Probably/usually taking many, many other businesses “with them”
Sad. But I think that several other so called “big-boys” may be in not dissimilar circumstances at the moment.
Times is hard me thinks!
Good luck everyone !!
i had 2 trucks in reids coulors for 4 mounths lots of goog work just not good enough rates. paid on time even when pulled off. good firm sorry to see them go.
Only recently realised that Reids used a lot of subbies, the work that Reids did will go to somebody else obviously, will there be a lot of blue and white units pulling red trailers? with pictures of horses on them?.
I have a lot of sympathy for subbies ,having been one and worked for subbies are they going to get paid.
there’s a copy of the letter sent to Reids employees on here somewhere stating it was all a rumour, nothing to worry about.
A local truck site is reporting ,Clough Mills where Reids are from(only a big Village has been at a standstill today with truckers and employees faced with locked gates.
Reid Transport have been sponsoring 3 rally cars in the recent Rally over here seem to have put a fair bit of money into that, lot of unhappy truckers, workers and families over here. regards derek
The thing we can all take from this is whether we are subbies, employed drivers or own the company it can happen to any of us at any time
Lets hope those who find themselves out of work can find something else soon
It’s obviously a wake up call to both the Employers and the Government
Fuel Taxes have got to be reduced and hauliers have got to realise they cannot continue to undercut each other doing transport for the basic costs.
It’s time the government stepped in and set the rates for transport, stopping every tom ■■■■ and harry from cutting each others throats in a bid to get work.
It’s strange how some companies when compared to identical fleets can give a better rate for a pallet, when I was in business I could send 1 pallet to Ireland by Montgomery’s for £76.00 but a local company could charge £49.00 for exactly the same pallet (Needless to say they went bust)
Does anyone know what in particular pushed them over the edge? All it takes sometimes is for one customer to go belly up, or even just be late paying, and it can all come crashing down around your ears. I hope everyone manages to get work elsewhere sooner rather than later.
Saw one of Reids today, heading up the M1 just past J42,as I was heading home at about 3.45pm.
Don’t know if he was heading into Leeds,or going up the M1/A1 link road, but he wasn’t hanging around.
Ken.
Seems they were on the slippy slope before they threw money at the rallying game!
sorry for any driver who gets made redundant , it’s not nice
that said
All the most of this thread has seemed to concentrate on are if Reids were running bent…who cares
well and good if they got away with it for so long…
you then say
So lets talk some sense and not rubbish about running bent
and
Fact - No On Cares About Running Bent When Your Lively Hoods Taken From You Without Reason Nor Warning
Scania v8, do you drive a truck or what? I repeat what I said at the top of my reply , being made redundant is horrible , Iknow , but please stop trying to defend some of the Reids men(or subbies) and ask for sympathy with your ‘who cares’ attitude.
Any driver will tell you they and a lot other Irish firms have a bad rep in the UK simply down to the speed they drive FACT
I’ve just seen one of their Scanias heading towards Dartford Crossing this afternoon, so are they still going?

BBC NEWS | UK | Northern Ireland | Truck firm workers resume picketSeems they were on the slippy slope before they threw money at the rallying game!
well, according to Reid Transport Ltd’s latest accounts, it was £3.2m in debt in 2005!!!
Doesnt suprise me, the casualties in this scenario are the subbies and staff, if hes been spending 1000s on Rallying cars then he deserves everythin he gets,
Didnt realise haulage was stil that lucrative to be sponsoring sporting events ■■?
Montgomery, Woodside, Mcburney are the ONLY 3 BIg major players from the North (Ireland) and who date back over , at least , 3+ decades. I dont see any of them sponsoring rally cars!
Montgomery appear in the Times richest list, McBurneys have recently spent over 2 £million sterling on trailers, not far off the figure Reids is quoted as being in the red!
Just hope the subbies get what they r owed, I really do, If they can get together, they should form a Co Op and carry on with the work, after all, they did the hard work , not Reids!.
Isn’t that how Fowler Welch started in the 80s ■■
Its them who will be the real losers as they have laid out huge amounts of money to do the job
I guess U will stil see wagons as they r subbies in Reids colours.
Be interesting to see how it plays out, how they went out of business.
Cause does sound strange if they had a lot of work and opened a new centre in south of england.
Was the actual company doing somthing dodgy (don’t mean VOSA type thing) but letting the company go into debt ?
Where they doing the work too cheap at a loss?
Did they have lots of work, but money for that work not coming quick enough and banks just pulled the plug ?
Who knows def lots of questions to be answered.
More worryingly for creditors the accounts reveal that the depot in Cloughmills is not owned by Reid Transport but by members of the Reid family. This means when the business, is finally disposed of, this valuable asset won’t be available to cover debts owed by the haulage firm

" Us subbies are owed thousands of pounds for work. There are about 20 to 30 subbies who all average between one to six lorries. I am owed about £30,000-£35,000 for last month and this month but I know guys who have five or six lorries, you are talking about £70,000, £80,000 there."
Sounds a complete mess, other problems of drivers with company credit cards and unable to get fuel to get back, what a mess.
Does sound really dodgy by what ive been reading, no wonder people are really angry.

Jeezus, Jeezus, Jeezus, the subbies are stuffed, Reid Transport has covered its track, wud have paid the family rent for the property, I hope they can get together ( the subbies) and reunite and take the work on. Im sure if they get together and they shid, they shud campaign ( from Reids suppliers) to have moneis paid to them and not Reid. Long shot I know but worth a go, else they should campaign to freeze their assests.
Its an awful, awful awful situation, Im gunnin for ya now if ya readin this.
Shade…don’t talk pure manure - one of your fellow country men read this forum earlier on and thought yourself and some of the other posters on this thread hadn’t a notion about the job! Don’t you come it that only Irish run bent…
What about MM International running out of Grimsby (Mr Moody) the biggest bent english runner of his time…theres more security cameras in his yard than there is tacho graphs and thats coming from the man himself! Plus the man above mentioned drove a Volvo FH16 under the guise of Moody Luxumborg before the current guise of MM International…that firm stinks to high hell of bent accounts, bent running (Least Reids didn’t get their own father life imprisonment… )
Half of his Scania 164s have found their ways to Ireland and everyone of them had been fiddled with wires and equipment that couldn’t even be hardly detected bar you were Paul Daniels! One even had been rolled over twice and re-housed and sold as ‘A MINTER’
So don’t you or another beano run down any Irish firm or driver - when you are bad yourselves!
Ohh for the record - you were wondering if I drive a lorry…like all forums - you never know who the person is thats posting
Let that be an end to whats a debate thats like shoveling water with a chip pan…
I think the facts presented above might silence a few loose mouths…
I think we r gettin off the subject,
Reids have gone bust, Subbies and Staff r owed thousands now, Sleep well now Liam Reid.Sure you wont lose your house now so.
