Reed Business Information acquires TruckNet UK

oddsodz:
Rikki,
will they do something about the spammers that are registering on trucknet ?,will they or have they looked at the members list, having over 4,000 members…how many are robot registrations?..and yes my site onlinetruckers is or was suffering from this robot registrations, all sorted by the way…

aka jimbo(onlinetruckers)

The spammers might be registering but their accounts don’t get acctivated

For what it’s worth, I cannot see RBI making this site a pay site, they will have been looking at the forums and seen the feeling over this. Yes, they will want a return on their investment, but they aren’t daft, by making it a pay site they will diminish there return greatly. No doubt they will have also looked at other drivers forums before deciding on this accuisition, and will have seen that sites which drivers have to pay to be members struggle.

To all those doubters just put yourselves in Rikki’s and the other owners shoes, and ask yourselves what would you have done?

I would have done exactly what Rikki has done, it was no doubt a good thing for him and his, I 'm just not sure that it will be a good thing for theis site, but hope I’m proved wrong (It has happened before! )

rikki congratulations mate.

as has been said reed will know the demographic that use this site ie that as drivers were tight gits  i cant see the main part of trucknet being a paysite as long as the trucknet name is there myself. but as it will be part of a much bigger project the other parts of the site may support this side of the site.

rikki and lucy have made some huge sacrifices to keep this site going over the years and it has now paid off. again well done rikki at least lucys life will be a lttle quieter

Thanks to those members who have shown support, and those who while wary are still willing to actually wait and see what happens rather than speculate and predict doom and gloom

couple points…

TruckNet UK WILL NOT become a pay website (Ofiicial from the guy in RBI with responsibility for TruckNet UK)
I wont teel you his exact words to me, but they were along the lines of it wont become a paysite as long has he has an opening in his posterior

I think most of the other points are covered by the reassurances from Roger Williams in his statement… Nothing will change

The TruckNet UK name will stay for the foreseeable future, and we continue to be hosted on Truck.Nets servers.

I intend to go and enjoy my Christmas now with my family , I will look ionto this thread when I can, but will leave any indepth answers until after the Christmas holidays

Have a good holiday all…

well done rikki and lucy in securing a long term future for trucknetuk.
obviously as a business it has been very difficult for you both to keep trucknet viable, with lucy hard at work all week and you being in the condition you are in i can only imagine the hardship you have suffered, i trust 2007 will be a much better year for you all now that the future of trucknet is secured, i know what it means to you rikki.
good luck to the trucknet team and the best of health to you rikki.

once again congratulations on finding a secure solution to the long term survival of this website.

I for one would just like to say a big THANKYOU to everyone on the site for supporting us for all these years. Without the members and their content, there would be no site, so really this is a cause for all round backpatting ( ) .

WE, as a community, have built this website.

WE, as a community, have nurtured it and grown it to a point where it has become so successful it became, in some ways, a victim of it’s own success.

WE, as a community, have stuck by it, despite having gone through some hard times this year - we’re still here, despite all suggestions to the contrary, and despite several occassions where it looked like Rikki and I would finally have to admit that it was too much for us and call it a day.

And now WE, as a community, have secured it’s future in the long term.

For crying out loud, guys, let’s CELEBRATE!!! We did good! ALL of us!

From a personal point of view, anyone who knows me will know what a struggle I’ve been having recently, trying to hold body, soul, family, and mortgage together under the cloud of quite major health problems all 'round. This takeover is the best thing that could have happened for me - the man that I love gets to keep his site and his “baby”, gets to carry on running it and steering it - hell, the new owners know he’s good at what he does and have as much bought his expertise as the site itself - and I can finally start thinking about slowing down and having some sort of a life again, after 3 years of trying to do two jobs!

So, again, THANKYOU all, from the very bottom of my diesel-addicted little heart.

The New Year 2007 has suddenly become a place where I can look forward into the light and be pleased to be seeing it in. Which is a ■■■■ sight more than could be said for 2006.

See, you become a paid employee and the first thing you want is to take holiday…tsk, tsk, tsk - bleeding cheek of it

like a lot of things in life hobbies can get out of hand and become a burden

and if your a driver any outside commitment can cause problems

the sponsorship and RBI takes the stress of running the site for some if not all

its a good site and well done to ALL who manage it

I think it is a good thing too with the publishers of Motor Transport and Commercial Motor having input. I read both publications on a weekly basis and all we need now is a link to Brian’s big lorry blog :stuck_out_tongue:

Like most other members I’m biding my time, waiting to see what, if anything, changes.

I’ll continue to read, post and mod’ as normal. If there are changes and I don’t like them, I’ll resign and be off.

There are other forums out there.

In the mean time, I’m happy that my friends, Rikki and Lucy, have a more financially secure future. I’m hoping that this buy up will secure the future for this site too.

I’m also sure that RBI haven’t just bought this site on a whim. They’ll have done their homework. They may have bought it to buy up and stop possible future competition, they may also have bought it to increase their stable and to ensure a viable presence in the on-line world. We’ll have to wait and see.

I don’t see any point in speculating on what might happen. If all continues more or less as normal, great. If not, good bye.
It seems perfectly straight forward to me.

A bike club site I am a member of has recently been going through a managment change and straight away people started complaining and saying how things were going to alter. This caused a once pleasant, funsite into a political minefield with loads of back bitting and arguing. Lets give people a chance before calling them. Rikkis first post said No Changes so lets except that and carry on as normal.

Davey Driver:
I Honestly cant see any reason for the sceptics to come out with the comments that they are.

Rikki originally, then assisted Lucy has supported this site financially from its beginning, I for one am very pleased that Rikki and Lucy have finally had the financial weight lifted off their shoulders for keeping this site going, if anyone deserves it these two people do.

Reed is a big company, yes they may have an Agenda to ensure they recoup their investment plus more, its called business. Rikki says they dont plan on changing anything, I believe him, why the hell would he want to lie about it? Then look a fool afterwards?

Reed are proabably sittting back quite sensibly and thinking the best way forward, in fact if they have been in negotiations for the past few months then they probably have an idea as to which way it is going to go. If this means a few extra Pages added to the site where they are selling adverts then good luck to them, after all, the site is remaining a free public access site, is that not the main IMPORTANT point?

If they were to add a few pages where you can click to view advertisments then your choice is still there, click to view dont click if you dont want to view, I’ll re-iterate the main point, the site will still be free and its future is now guaranteed, its not that long ago where we were all discussing the pro’s and cons of making payments to the site to help keep it going, and Yes both Rikki and Lucy declined every offer from drivers wishing to make donations.

Good Luck Rikki and Lucy and I hope the deal was an excellent one to help you both recoup the costs you have both ploughed in over the year’s.

I will say Welcome to RBI and lets hope that 2007 will be a more prosperous year for Trucknet UK and its members, regardless WHO owns the site. :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

Well said Davey.

The man who so successfully ran his own company, and since it went ■■■■ up, has done nothing but whinge about having been shafted by the "investor/purchaser.

'Nuff said.

I would like to withdraw this statement if I may? And apologize for the harsh (and ill-judged) comment.

Apologies, Davey.

In the early days of the internet, well my early days anyway, Commercial Motor and Motor Transport use to be online, so you could read the magazines without paying for them.

I imagine a lot of content from thiis site could be used in the magazines provided it is legal decent and true.

Maybe we will all end up with regular royalty cheques to bolster our wages

Wonderful news and a victory for drivers! Thanks to Rikki and Lucy all drivers, new and old are now guaranteed a free to use platform that we all need and want!

Congrats Rikki and Lucy, you both along with the your team have done the UK proffesional driver proud!

Its also great news that Rikki is still at the head of something he has worked so hard to build and long may it continue.
