Hi all, been looking at Reed Boardall jobs working nights. Speaking to the company they said usual shift is 12hrs but this can occasionally go up to 15hrs. Just wondered if anyone works there can tell me if this is accurate or should I expect them to max me out for 15 every day?
Expect the worst, anything else is a bonus
Agency begged me…
To cover some nights for them. I kept declining because they were 40 miles away from where I was living at the time. After some considerable negotiations for petrol money and a guaranteed 12 hours minimum, I did a few shifts there. All local, usually down to Tesco Donny and never over 8 hours.
This was many years ago so, it’s just an anecdote.
I gave it up despite it being a cushy number because I was falling asleep in my car on the way home.

It’s not possible for them to do that

Pulling a DD on frozen deliveries to various RDC’s is the perfect storm for numerous three hour breaks so it is entirely possible that the TO will push their drivers to take full advantage of that.

5 x 15 hrs = 75 hours a week push in a sixth shift and your at 90 hours a week - thats not a job as much as a lifestyle choice . I’d make sure your ready for that and if you have a wife/ husband / partner I’d talk to them about it as well .
While everyone’s preferences are different, for my money a regular 12-15hr night shift is absolute madness and if done for a prolonged period will take a chunk out of anyone’s life expectancy. When I was starting out one old timer gave some advice that has always held me in good stead: Days are for working, nights are for sleeping.
The job itself is a dawdle although I was on days when I worked there. If you can handle the long nightshifts then I’d recommend it. Decent place to work.

Good advice but i wouldn’t want to drive for a living if they suddenly banned night shifts it would be utter chaos

It’s 60 per week maximum work time, 56 hours driving max per week, 90 hours max driving per fortnight.
OP needs to get up to speed on his driver’s hours if he thinks he can be working 15 hours every day (without using split daily rest)
Also, he needs to know about the night shift ten hour limit, though they’re probably already opted out of that across the board
Reed Boardall’s wagons are double shifted. In my time there it was rare to do 12hrs because they wanted the wagon back and if you did it’s because you got held up at a RDC, usually Tossco or Asda. 10/11hrs were more the norm.
Thanks all for the replies. I was aware a big chunk of the 15hrs would be made up of sitting for hours at an RDC rather than max driving, just needed a guide but usual 10/11 hr days works fine around family life.
Worked nights for several years and always found I slept better, exercised more and was generally less stressed in life but appreciate they’re not for everyone.
Which depot where you looking at starting at?

Boroughbridge
I would expect it would be going distance to tip at an RDC or something, but they are unlikely to want you coming back empty, so possibly a collection or a trailer swap somewhere as well. As others have alluded to, you can get held up at RDCs for four hours or more, so that is what you are dealing with.
You could be trunking to a satellite depot or something, but if someone phones in sick then you can bet your bottom dollar that you would be asked to do something not in the original plan.
A job to take a night out bag with you at all times probably.
See more of them sat in RDCs than out on the road. They seem pretty similar to others doing that type of work. Never really spoke to any of their drivers but will ask next time I see one in Daventry, Pineham etc…
Lineage where I work is more or less the same work and is ok tbh. Do run back empty occasionally but usually a trailer swap at another depot en route back or a local collection. Shift length is more or less what you make it. Not planned ridiculously.
We collect them here at Tesco Daventry although ironically there’s none here now but when I bump into one here or at gas station I’ll have an ask and see what they say
Expect to run to your available hours most days, they will try and encourage you to do extra but NO works well.
13.75 -17.50 wages depending which shift/day etc.
All about compliance there so keep it clean and tidy.
Its a marmite job not everyone’s cup of tea but decent kit well maintained but can be a tad grubby inside unfortunately.
It is what it is, not many are perfect

What they will say is, if you run out of hours, there is a bed behind you.
