I was layed off 24th December 1992 then got hammered in the pub after.
We get an enhanced redundancy package. Basically 2x the official guidelines. This was awarded to us by our bosses out of the goodness of their hearts. NOT!!! It was of course negotiated by our union. Just sayin.
Wouldn’t it be better to have the plug pulled on 30th december, get a number of weeks severance pay in addition to any redundancy pay, and of course having got through a psychologically better Christmas “not knowing” that you were about to lose your job?
As for the rest of us in Agency Land - don’t we have similar worries about the work “dropping dead in the new year” - EVERY year?
I sense that this coming Christmas - is going to feature the worst economic downturn we’ve had in living memory, rather than the expected “worst one since 2011” as it stands…
BTL Landlords - are losing money hand-over-fist now that their contracted rent payments no longer cover the mortgage…
The Tenents? - Presumably keep paying the rent to the Bank Lender, should that BTL house be re-possessed due to mortgage default by the landlord, meanwhile.
Before we get to THAT point however, there’s going to be an awful lot of people “Tightening their belts” to even MAKE these now-increased, and set to increase even further “mortgage payments”.
Expect a dropping off on trades like Gardening, Home Improvements, Garage Services, and other “skippable” items that people cannot really afford to go on with.

Errr … yeah, that’s part of “choosing” to do agency work, your point being?

Haven’t you and all the doom merchants been saying that since Covid started in early 2020? Things got pretty crap these last 12 months with interest rates rising, energy bills, cost of living “crisis” etc but it’s in no way comparable to things that happened in the late 80’s/early 90’s or 2008.
