The simple answer is they cannot FORCE you to do it
They have the legal right to plan it that way providing they are not asking you to do anything illegal
It is up to you to decide if what you are doing is safe or not
If you feel it is not safe due to lack of sleep/rest then put it in writing and ask the company what their solution to it is IN WRITING
Their solution could mean you are fired
YOU might need to decide between SAFETY or JOB
Out on the road the DRIVER is responsible for being fully alert not the company
A supermarket is planning 14.45 runs? Can’t be one of the big 4 gotta be one of the diddys like aldi or summit. See if you’re a tramper 15 hr days are fine and dandy but see if you’re a day/night man they leave you feeling like a burst baw!

Is there a problem with this then?

A 14 3/4 hour spread-over will always be a reduced daily rest but are they planning a 9 to 9 1/4 hour rest period between shifts ?
If so why not suggest that a later start should follow a reduced daily rest period

Well it won’t take much of a delay somewhere and you’ll be nighting out.

Personally I don’t think it’s safe but I’m sure I’ll get called names and get shot down in flames for saying it.

There would be for me if I tried that because anything less than about 8 hours sleep and I am like a zombie - I have been like that my whole life
I envy those who can be alert on less sleep
We are all different so if a company wants a driver who can be fully alert on little sleep then they should make that a condition in the contract of employment and make it known in their adverts for the job

Thats a fair enough point.
If your truck is a sleeper cab and it isn’t used again after your shift just tell the company in order to fulfill the new reduced rest period requirements being introduced by the company and to feel refreshed and to get more than 5/6 hrs sleep you need to stay in the depot and sleep in the truck and negotiate a payment for it If not it’s 11off or you look for another job Depends how good the job is and how much ‘you/they’ really want you to stop there
At my last job I suggested to them the very same thing and got £12.50 for a night out at the factory, not the greatest amount but better than nothing and saved 1 hour travelling each way, to home and back, the cost of diesel and getting less than 5hrs sleep.

Oh how I detest that phrase, but it is funny when ya fire it back at the planners when ya 2 hours late for a delivery.

Bit off topic but i love the look on the gate mans face when you turn up at 12 and they ask you what time your booked in for and you say 10 .
My solution, find a 35 min traffic delay someone and have a night out.

Stop for a p*ss you’ll end up on a night out.
15 hour days not normal.
right, time for some honesty now, although, i don’t think i will get much from you lot
how many of you actually get 8 hours sleep a night, even if you have the time?
say, you are on an 11 hour rest, 10 minutes travelling time each way, do you still go to bed and make sure you get 8 hours rest or do you stay up watching the TV or ■■■■■■■ about on the computer?
i would say that the majority of drivers here would not get 8 hours sleep in their time off even if they had an 11 hour rest
so, where is the problem?
for those that moan about the travelling if it is an hour or more each way, move closer to your job, or move job closer to home
you knew what the travelling was BEFORE you took the job, so, FFS, stop whinging about it now!!!
as for the suggestion of sleeping in the truck in the yard and wanting night out money for it, why would the company want to pay you night out money for doing something of your choosing?

there again, your choice, so, why should the company pay?

Dave Penn;
the company is not breaking any rules with this, it is part of the job, just the same as getting stuck in traffic and running late is part of the job
but, anyone caught taking the ■■■■ and deliberately hanging the job out to get a night out, won’t last very long with the company, they have ways of checking up on things like this, and can use it against you to get rid of you

my solution to your solution would be to make sure that your P45 would be in with your wage slip
shuttlespanker:
so, where is the problem?
Least 11 hrs gives you time to unwind.
9 hrs don’t.
