A big incident with people trapped at Red Funnel Ferry Port in Southampton today.
Lorry Driver (if that’s what you call him) has made a bit of a mess.
When viewing, keep an eye on the Booth in the bottom right hand corner.
I think a risk assessment of the cabin location would have prevented it being placed there.
For sure the driver takes responsibility for the actual on the day collision but the ferry company should never have placed the cabin in such a risky location.
If it did not happen today it sure was going to happen sometime.

Used that ferry many dozens of times over the years and the booking office has always been there without incident.
Not Red Funnels fault but the clown in the Scania!

Yep Grumpy , the clown went the wrong side and then put to much right hand down when he pulled away
I learned my lesson on tail swing first day I had a kooiap/Moffet on, clipped a parked car on a right turn, luckily virtually no damage.
I remember going on the Stranraer/Belfast ferry and falling out with the guy who told me to keep tight to the bulkhead as he was guiding me in towards the bow of the boat before I did a u’ turn.
He thought I was a foreigner and gave me dogs abuse as I ignored his instructions, until I pointed out (in my English accent) that if I done as he said I’d take out the side of the boat with the kooi…or at least damage it badly.
He muttered something and let me carry on, much to the amusement of his mate that made him more angry.

How you can put any blame on Red Funnel is beyond me.
Headboard swing and rear trailer swing are the first thing you are wanted about when training to be a truck driver.
If you go to the BBC website you can see two news items generated by this CCTV camera within 24 hours… as its the same camera which captured the Meteor.

Is it? I was trained by 2 reputable schools for class 2 then 1 and neither ever mentioned it. Luckily I’d figured it out pretty quick from driving vans but theres too much else to cram in these days. Lots of stuff you’d expect to be covered never gets a mention scarily.
Surely a crash barrier round the cabin shoupd exist incase anyone rammed ir coming in, eg: has a heart attack heading towards it. Bet there will be now.

Been there many times for different companies, accident waiting to happen, cramped place, Joe Public milling about, should at least be a clear sign diverting HGVs to the Left of the cabin.

I was never warned either by anybody
Why do training schools talk so much about road postioning when turning and when to take extra room at junctions etc. When I did my class it was mentioned about rear end swing when turning and road positioning. When I did my C+E it was talked about headboard swing and using the road for rear end swing. so yes any decent trainer should be explaining those things to a new driver.
