HGV driving is something I’m considering as a short term solution for me personally with the added benefit I can fall back on the skill if I need too later in life. I’m 32.
My question is, what really is a realistic day shift driving hours out there in the real world? 6am-6pm? 5am-4pm? Tramping and Night shifts isn’t something I want to go down.
Any advise on what a reasonable new pass, hourly day shift rate would be?

Day shifts can start from 3/4am onwards.
Most finish when they finish. The finish times given are generally works of fiction. Go on the bins for a finish time.
In short, don’t do HGV stuff if you need to fin9sh at a specific time. Chances are you wont.
As a fall back though it’s a good option. I wouldn’t do it full time. But ad hoc for extra money and to make up any shortfall it’s pretty solid.

3-4am starts are common. Don’t forget to add time for a shower, shave, toilet, breakfast, making a butty, doing a flask or whatever. Then add your commute to the yard. So maybe getting up at 1:30am -2:30am
Your maximum legal ‘working day’ can be as long as 15 hours.
Then you’ve got the commute home. Walk in at 7pm, eat your tea, get a shower and bed. Maybe sleep for 5-6 hours and do it all again. It’s a brutal work schedule.
Not all jobs are like that but a hell of a lot are. Some even want you in every other Saturday as well. That’s absolutely maxing your driving/working hours.
It gets to the point you start considering tramping because you’re at home so little you might as well cut the commute out and get a bit of extra sleep and an extra £25 to sleep in the truck.
My partner done mon-fri 6:30am start and his finish times would vary between 2-4pm but if he had a london run in a van then he would finish later around 5pm depending on traffic. He held C1 C+E

I’m not saying it’s impossible to find a job like that. I’m saying it’s incredibly rare because in most cases, it’s not profitable to an operator to run a truck like that. They want a body in that seat for the legal max or until the night man turns up.
But well done to your partner finding a job that allowed proper quality family time. I think that’s what most guys would give their left arm for.
