Ratchet straps - frayed ends

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop ratchet strap ends fraying?

We use mix of nylon and fabric. At least with nylon ones I can heat up and melt ends but the fabric ones are a pain to thread if ends start fraying.

And yes I have asked for replacement ones but I was thinking of cutting these old ones down when new ones turn up so have some nice short ones for when load is little so saves having tons of strap to pull through.

Anything you can dip them into to seal them or the like?

Could try glue.

Thought of trying UHU glue and letting it dry for a few days, seems to stay partial flexible

can you not gently burn them?

They are fabric type not nylon so wish could. Looks like they’ve already been singed so whoever had them before me must have tried it.

I’ll try glue, just a thought that someone may have found a super dip. Seems a shame to throw an otherwise good strap into the box of no return

Loctite do a flexible glue designed for bonding fabric/tarps/tents etc.

if not duck tape the ends?

or as suggested keep cutting them a bit shorter each time (used to have a few short straps and ended up using them more than full ones).

I used a sharp knife to cut a couple of centimetres off the ends. It would be a long time before the shorter length was even noticeable.

One of my pet hates was the drivers who left the ratchets threaded and tangled up, so if I got bored, I would get them all out, untangle them, throw out any damaged ones, trim or melt ends, spray oil on the mechanism and coil them up neatly.

We’ve been doing this for years…quick blast with a blow torch… flatten with a hammer so they’ll go through the ratchet…job sorted.

cheers kate thought I was losing the plot but I guess maybe they make different types as am sure we used to turn them into a sort of gunk then flatten :open_mouth:

Cut and dip in a fabric glue. Wrap the end with a bit of clingfilm then place between 2 blocks of wood and clamp. Leave for a few days to dry out.
Check and repeat allowing adhesive to soak into about 2 inches, wrap clamp leave to dry job done.

Cut them down half inch, then cover the end with a good quality tape

In the real world just get new ones, wtf !!!

Never said I wasn’t getting new ones, I was seeing about making use these old ones by trimming down to shorter for smaller loads so don’t have 20ft excess through ratchet when a short one will be quicker.

I tape the ends of mine works a treat. Leave it a centimetre over the end of the strap, this will give you a key to lead the straps through the ratchet.

Trim neatly, soak last couple of inches in varnish (the stuff that also does some stuff it doesn’t say on the tin) allow to dry.
