Random question: what would I need if anything?

So metaphorically speaking.
Say I owned a car transporter of some kind let’s say a beaver tail or a tilt slide, and I brought a car up in brum and wanted to bring it back home to oxford for myself not hire or reward, would I need an O licence ?’ I understand if it’s over 3.5T I need a tachometer and all that but for me just to go get it for myself could I just buy a truck insure it then go get my new car, or is there another licence I’d need to do so?

Really random question but I’ve always fancied a vehicle transporter of some kind.

My understanding is that it would depend on why you was buying the cars, you need an operators licence if you’re using the vehicle for hire or reward or if the vehicle is used as part of your trade or business.

If you was buying cars to sell you would need an operators licence because the transporter would be used as part of your business, if you collected old cars for a private collection and never usually sold them I imagine you could get away without on operators licence.

I doubt many people buy car transporters purely for pleasure, so unless it’s a show vehicle or not to be used as part of your trade or business I think you’re probably going to need an operators licence

Ok that makes sense, I’d be buying cars to repair then sell, we’ll that would be the plan but I usually sell my car and keep the repaired one

If you are repairing cars to sell then it’s hire or reward so you need an I licence

Thanks, that’s a tad expensive for a few times a year so I’ll pass on that idea

Hi TT,

Sorry mate, but what you’ve described is the definition of ‘own - account.’
Own account is when the owner of the vehicle is the owner of the goods that the vehicle is carrying.

Hire and reward is when the owner of the vehicle uses the vehicle to carry goods that he doesn’t own.

My tip for the OP is that it’s probably far less hassle to buy a <3.5t transporter for moving the odd car now and again.

Thanks
