Coming back from North Wales last week,(in my car),on the A51 between Tarporley and Nantwich, almost opposite Car Transplants,I saw a 30 foot Dalek built with straw bales.
The farmer builds a different straw sculpture every year. Past models have included teddy bears and the Eiffel tower. Worth making a detour for at least once a year, I reckon.
doing ok thanks chris , it’s been a heavy week though . wife’s birthday on thursday and golden wedding on saturday , bloody skint now and got to save up for xmas . i’ll have to ask that nice mr osborne if i can have a rise soon . how are you keeping these days ? keep away from the north east, tanker drivers will be the first to swing , cheers , dave

Sorry, ROF, I’ve got to ‘out camel you’ and tell you about a real camel at the side of the road. In the late 60s, when I was driving 2-up for Gascoyne Trading out of Perth, there was a real camel that had made the Whim Creek Hotel between Roebourne and Port Hedland its home. The camel, known as Clarence had a habit of coming up behind sitting drinkers in the beer garden and grabbing their cans of beer out of their hands and skulling them. In fact, it drank so much grog, it became an alcoholic. On the Perth to Port Hedland chiller run we used to load on Fridays, plug the freezer into the mains overnight if there were no cylones approaching the coast and leave Perth early on the Saturday morning, usually arriving at the pub about 05.00 on Sunday morning to unload a few cartons of fresh vegetables and other perishables. To avoid waking the staff up I used to drive into the car park as quietly as possible and hope the freezer motor didn’t fire up and make a noise. Jock W, my regular off-sider, mate to you Poms, was usually asleep in the bunk with his head behind mine. As soon as we had stopped, Clarence would trot over the cab and put his head into the window looking for a drink. At that time of the morning, after having driven for over 30 hours, the cab floor was awash with empty Coke and other cool drink cans. If Jock was still asleep, I used to hold a can out of the window and Clarence would come over to take it. I used to move over to the left of the cab and then put the can on the pillow besides Jock’s head. Then came the moment of [zb], I would belt Jock on the backside and yell ‘Wake up’. The poor sod would wake up and see the slimy green teeth of Clarence, smell his awful breath and then try to beat the [zb] out of me. When you are in your 20s, this was fun with a capital ‘F’.

Then there was the camel on the Northbound side of the M5 in Somerset.
I’ve got to admit your camel post is a lot more entertaining than mine, matey.
Note to self: must try harder!
There’s a farmer in southern Tasmania does the straw bale sculpture thing as well, just south of Campbell town on the midland high way. so far there’s been Stone Henge, The Pyramids, a pretty good chicken, sheep, a fair size castle, and I think the Sydney opera house, but that one fell down.

Jeff…
Ah! Tasmania eh !
A wonderful place if I can recall it, we used to berth at the IXL Jam Factory in Hobart, when I was at Sea. We used to call Tassy the land of ABC. Apples, Beer and C… Happy Days.
Cheers, Archie.
Archie IXL jam factory is now a posh Art hotel @ $400 per night. The old dock is now home to million dollar rich boys toys. Still plenty of C’s about but probably not in the type you were taking about. But you can still get fish and chips on the dock for $7 if you remind the guy your local and not a tourist.

Coming down Rivlin Valley Rd. Sheffield many years ago a police car…and a young lady with not a stitch of clothing on…NOTHING. I can only think somebody had dumped her out of a car because it’s not a residential area.
ah , rivelin valley road . did you ever spot the bloke dressed up in mini skirt fishnets etc hanging about the bogs by the bridge at the bottom end ? it wouldn’t have been so bad but he was about six foot two and built like a brick outhouse . we always gave him a toot on the horn and he always blew a kiss . what if we had broken down there though ■■?

Most of my ‘quirky’ things involve old stuff, I always have to have a look at the old railway carriage in the garden on the A52 just outside Derby, also the yard with the Mickey Mouse Fodens in as you head further towards Leek, I also have a look down at the fairground winter quarters full of old Showman’s caravans as you go up the M1 northbound towards J28.
Hiya that,s John he used to run a mobile store with Foden spares, i think he dose something similar for another company now.
John,s dad always run Foden tippers. Johns on TN as Foden man. he dosn’t get on much.
