Question: Accidents/Tachos

Hi All,

As many of you are aware, there was a horrible accident involving a Tour Bus in Arkansas, at the weekend. Investigators are pointing towards fatigue as being the probable cause, as the accident occured at 5am, with the driver alreadly having driven 8.5 hours.

Do you think that it is only a matter of time before the mandatory introduction of Tachos/Electronic Logging to North America■■?

I, for one, think it is.

Jim.

If our company had to use tacho’s they would go bust :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation:

Seriously, the laws on hours of service are so regularily broken, this entire business would go broke if they actually were required to follow the rules. Also, since most American drivers are just plum stupid, I doubt if half of them could even figure out how to use those fiddly units you guys have.

A few of the larger companies (like Schneider) tried using electronic logbooks, but some states had problems with them (which included detaining drivers waiting for a paper printout), and most of these companies gave up on the idea, since they wouldn’t want to keep records of law-breaking by their drivers, anyway.

Maybebusses will end up with something like this, but short of major legislation requiring them, you won’t see them used much. Even with Kerry winning the election, we’ll still have a lot of Republicans that won’t allow it.
