Question about PCV licence entitlement

Am taking my Class 2 re-test on Aug 30th, but in mean time a mate has started a airport mini bus service etc. Its an 8 seater. He was wondering if I was able to cover for him.
Question is am I able to drive it on my car licence ? Passed car test in 1981 & I’ve got entiltlement for D1 & D1E. Am I covered?

Cheers

Yes although I’m not sure whether you need a “badge” or not.

from the DVLA site
To drive a minibus which has nine or more passenger seats for hire or reward you will normally need passenger carrying vehicle entitlement (PCV). To obtain this you must meet higher medical standards and take a further driving test. However, if you drive a minibus for an organisation under the minibus or community bus permit scheme you will not need to have the higher PCV entitlements.

Translated into plain english

No, you’re not.

there is no problem with the number of seats, the problem is that you would be getting paid, which makes it “for hire or reward
sorry

think youll have to apply to council for phc licence (private hire car) 20 odd questions on local area but your mate should know this

dont know about east yorks, but down here you need a hackney /private hire licence from the local council.

which will involve
CRB check
loads of forms
passport photo (for the badge)
and last but not least a BLOODY FEE, NFDC was £80 for 1 yr,117 for 3yrs,and takes about 8-10 weeks to process.

He is only driving a minibus with 8 seats and the DVLA states that 9 or more requires a PCV

8 passenger seats you do not need pcv but as it’s for hire and reward you will need local private hire license.

Hence I said “there’s no problem with the number of seats”

I also never mentioned pcv, just that he wouldn’t be covered because of the “reward” bit

taxi badge is needed, pcv not required - and from an old hand should be well avoided

Thanks to everyone for all the replies. Very helpful.
