Sploom and drivers like Sploom will be first in the queue.
All this type of stuff should be focused on the principle rather than the actual subject matter.
We should also be asking why the job has been reduced to this state of affairs.
This job has gone from one extreme to the other since I started way back in the middle ages or start of the 80s at least.
It was the freedom that attracted most of us, the chance to prove yourself was also part of it.
It was the alternative to working in a supervised environment like a factory, you were the modern day John Wayne type saddletramp cowboy if you like .
You were sent away for however long the job took, days or even weeks depending on what you done, only contacting the firm maybe once a week to keep them up to press.
We were left alone, nobody could contact you,.and you had no desire to contact those you worked for,.because you used your own initiative,…and guess what?..Yeah the job got done,.because it was a bit like character building, you built up your abilities and your professionalism, you found your own way round (with a map ) you found places to stay and shock horror…the job had a social life attached.
Sure you had the ones who took the ■■■■, stretched it out, took advantage of the non contact, and problems occurred because of this, but on the whole they were found out and got rid of.
The equivalent to those guys today are the inept and the incompetent that bring the job down and the reputation of the rest of us down.
The inept and incompetent start with poor driver training, because there is little to learn about driving a modern truck, very few skills attached (apart from reversing, but even that ain’t part of the test anymore ) basically you are now driving a bloody big car, unlike the days when trucks and cars were chalk and cheese,.so consequently many ‘truckers’ are car drivers with a Class 1…and NO I do NOT want to go back to crash boxes, and the like before anybody jumps in…
Another cause of incompetence is the development of micro managing,.which started with trackers, which has eradicated initiative and professionalism, in favour of having to be told when to wipe your arse virtually by telephone call.
So consequently many drivers have become in a state ranging from just could not gaf apathetic to totally servile ’ ‘borgs’ who follow bloody stupid rules and policies without question…so then the situation gets worse.
Put in the mix the gullible who believe all the official line co b/s and go on to regurgitate it all,.and we have the cluster ■■■■ now that the job has become.
So how this is relevant to the thread you ask (if you ain’t bored yet )
It is that the natural progression is to have stuff like cameras to both ‘police’ these guys, keep them in check, and to maintain the over regulated, over supervised present system
Maybe that outlook is a bit strong, or ott, or you may even think I’m talking complete ■■■■■■■■ …but just look around for a moment, and you will see aspects of what I am droning on about.
In mitigation, proven by this thread there are thankfully still a lot of good drivers with their heads screwed on who can see right through the sh, but who have to put up with it because of the rest,.who are sadly becoming the majority.
Here endeth Rob’s latest Trucking social history and analysis of the industry’
Hope I have not bored you to ‘Winseer level’ on it.

Makes good sense. 100% agree.
Sploom:
I have to do my daily checks which include verifying that the camera is working and clean.Much as I dont like cameras,I wouldnt cover it because, what do you tell the manager when he asks you why you covered the camera?.It seems a daft thing to do if you want to keep your job,or if you are an agency driver and want continued work.Im getting tired of cleaning this [zb] off the lense, any idea the best thing to clean sticky residue…
Clean it with valve grinding paste, problem solved.
Robroy, you can be falsly accused. You could be accused of using your mobile phone. If there were 2 witnesses, that would be enough to stand up in a court if law,as I understand it.If I was accused of using a mobile phone behind the wheel,I would immediatly call for the dashcam footage
Would you do the same?

Ahh right, trying to back me into a corner by giving me a favourable option on the subject matter.
Is this part of the brainwash process and technique you are so familiar with on this and other subjects you favour?
If I was drowning would I pray to ‘God’ ?
Nah I’d just get a good brief to sort the job out,.and leave the tactics to him.
Then maybe sue them for wrongful arrest, deformation of character or whatever he came up with.
If the camera footage was used as a tactic would be up to him, but it would not make me change my mind or opinions…whatever the outcome.
You can twist and point the camera towards the ceiling/dashboard, no need to bring black tape along. Just remember to straighten it back up after you fill up at the services before going back to the yard
Robroy, you answered my question in a fashion, but ,I think we would all ask for dashcam footage if the circumstances demanded it.
But,anyway,if the dashcam footage of a fleet of lorries was made publicly available, who in their right mind would even spend 2 minutes watching it

Think what you like mate, I’ve already told you what I’d do, so don’t think for me and put words in my mouth just because I did not give you the answer you wanted.
As for your second paragraph…So what? What is your point?
It certainly does not justify having them fitted just because they ain’t glued to the camera 24/7…And who suggested they were anyway? It’s irrelevant.
The fact that they can is enough for me,.and enough for anybody who has respect for themselves not to want them.
I think I’m going to stop reading posts like yours, on stuff like this, it just reminds me how lame some people are,.and how far they will go along with stuff without a hint of protest.
Quite depressing really.
I fully realise that complaint and showing disapproval for some things ain’t going to make a difference very often with some stuff, but at least it shows an element of resistance,.proving that you are not dead from the neck up on all this type of crap,.and that you can see right through it.
I do not see that with you.
dozy:
Yes when I had a camera in the cab I stuck tape over it , that tape was taken off odd times when on holiday / used at the weekends , I just stuck another piece of tape over it
So how do you explain yourself to the manager when he asks you why you put tape on it.
Isnt that classed as interferring with company property?
the maoster:
SHYTOT:
If you are doing nothing wrong ie smoking on the phone shouting abuse
what’s the problemAbsolutely! You should go a step further I suggest and have cameras placed in every room in your house and pay a company to monitor them on the chance that a violent house break in occurs.
After all, if you’re doing nothing wrong where’s the problem?
I dont think you can compare both situations like for like.If you are in your house, its your time and there is an expectation of privacy.
But in a company vehicke that doesnt belong to you and being paid, its s different thing
edd1974:
So someone is placing stickers on the in cab camera.
Well that myth about about someone in an office watching us all day has been proved wrong…
As if that was the case surely as soon as the stickers went on there be on the phone to you complaining.
We were told that they dont view the footage unless there is an incident,in which case they a procedure in place that they are supposed to follow.
We were also told that interferring with the equipement ,like putting tape over it,would create a red flag and would then be classed as an incident

Yeah but would you though really?
All.I’m interested in these days is making life as easy as I can for myself.
As I’m sure you are the same,.I’ve absolutely nothing to prove in driving and/or handling any truck gearbox, crash,.constant mesh, or synchro,.so why would I stop the readiness and convenience of an auto box where I can just select drive, and sit back.
Although it is on the list of ,.and a massive part of the dumbing down process in the job, where my Grandma could now drive a truck, it is neither here nor there to me personally in real terms.
Ok, it’s a shame that it’s gone a long way to result in many crap drivers, but it’s well up on my CGAF list, my priority is anything for an easy or easier life for no1 nowadays.
It would be a bit like swapping my reasonably modern (I know, Mr Average
) Mondeo, for a Ford Anglia.

Yes i would have them back, more than that made a legal requirement doing so would remove the most incompetent of the steering wheel operative class from our industry and deter their like from joining in the first place.
This could only have a positive effect for the industry as a whole as well as making the job more lucrative (supply/demand) for the rest of us.
Hmm surely there are better ways to re gain quality of drivers.
Improve training for starters, train people to actually drive a truck proficiently to a decent standard, instead of teaching them to get around a test route the best way they can, and drum into them courtesy and empathy at grass routes level to get things back as it once was.
Followed by a probationary period with monitoring for 3 years.
I don’t see why tf I should I have to put myself out to.allow for a bunch of ■■■■ s who will never be drivers fir as long as they have an ■■■■ orifice .
I know it’ll never happen btw,.I’m just addressing your point.
Anyhoo back to Rev Sploom and his ■■■■ cameras.
Its not my fault we have these cameras.I never invented cameras. Why dont you go blame the guy who invented them?
Oh,you cant because he isnt here.
So,you go after the easy meat, rev Sploom!

Have you been on the communion wine or what?
Calm down honey, nobody is blaming you for anything…how tf did you come to that conclusion?
It was you who brought it up and so prompted the responses.
No,Ive been on the barefoot pinot tonight.
We only do the communion wine about once a month or 6 weeks.
But only about the equivilent of an eggcup.
On the keyboard this week with the worship team
Youre always welcome to come and see what we do,if you are ever down this way…
