So there was i looking for a motor quote when i came across this.
Professional driver
For insurance purposes, Norwich Union Direct considers a professional driver somebody who is a taxi driver, chauffeur, driving instructor, fast-food driver, courier or in the motor trade.
Looks like a truck driver is not as professional as the pizza boy!!!.
I use to get my insurance, via a broker, from a company that specialised in PSV licence holders, I never understood that as HGV drivers have a better accident record than PSV drivers, due to the pressure thats put on bus drivers to keep to unrealistic timetables.
Still it saved me a few quid.
Having just changed career should i expect a reduction in my premium now i hold both lgv licence catagorys? or is that wishfull thinking and it will go up just to pee me off.
I was always told that insurance companies load hgv/psv drivers policies because they look on it as you have been driving all day and when you get in your car you arnt concentrating as much. thats why i never tell the insurance im a driver
In a previous life as a programmer for an insurance company, I can tell you that ‘yuppie’ careers, programmers included, are loaded, as they’re all London wide boys in the insurers eyes…
My extortionate insurance cover came DOWN £60 when I told them I was a HGV driver… !!!
But I must add that it’s a modified car that’s expensive to insure fullstop, so for a normal (cough boring cough) car that differences might be minimal…
I also know for a fact that ‘Motor trade’ is a REALLY BAD one to tell them as it’s heavily loaded due to you knockin about allday in cars that ain’t yours, etc…
As far as professional Driver goes Jammy Truck Drivers do NOT want to be classed as this when obtaining Motor Insurance.
The interpretation as far as insurance companies goes, is simply someone who drives their car on a professional basis, as listed.
These people using their own vehicles for their employment actually pay a higher rate than a Truck Driver because obviously the truck is classed as their main vehicle.
My Son answered the question that he was a professional driver and his insuance quote went up by 75%, when he queried it they explained it was because he’s stated he was a professional driver, he told them he meant he was a Truck Driver and thats what he was reffering to, luckily they accepted his reason and reduced the cost back to the original quote.

When watchin the telly and they interview a professional driver, ie, a rep, I want to scream at the screen and say “they are not professional drivers, they just drive a lot, - have they done a series of theoretical and practical tests to be called professional”
