Had my reversing & coupling/decoupling training yesterday.
The tractor Unit had an extended walkway extending around the fifth wheel.
I found with the reduced clearence between trailer & walkway, my short arms were unable to reach the dog clip to detatch/attach it.
I ended up using a pair of pipe plies, which took some practice.
Has anyone had this issue? Is it common?

How short are your arms■■?
Did your trainer suggest that it was particularly difficult on this truck? Could he not provide a better solution. The suspension would normally be at the top of its travel at this point, could you wind up the legs and drop the suspension before the dog clip? I know that spells KALCB not the familiar KCALB.

Did try another truck without the walkway later & that was fine.
Tried truck suspension up/down to Max but it didn’t increase the gap between trailer & walkway.

I don’t know if it is common but I had similar issues because of my stocky build and poor shoulder mobility (post shoulder surgery).
Instead of over-reaching for the clip, I prefer to really get my head and shoulder right in between the wheel arch and trailer till my stomach is literally touching the wheel arch. I find this helps a LOT.

Yeah, tried another truck without the walkway and it was fine. The issue appears to be trucks with a “walkway” extended around the fifth wheel. As it raises the hight & reduces size of the gap between truck & trailer.
