Gone to put my digi card in tonight to start my shift and twice it has come back out with the message “Problem with card” The third time I put it in there has been no problem but it looks like a call to the DVLA.
Anyone on here had to get a new card from the DVLA because of a problem and if so what is the timescale involved? I’ve heard the scare stories of drivers waiting ages for their new card to come and I know how long it takes for the DVLA to sort other maters out i.e regarding giving my licence back and how long that took
The trouble is how am I supposed to work and earn a living when I haven’t got a digi card and I’m waiting on a new one from the DVLA■■?

Sent mine off Monday last with error 50 hope its back soon.
Do a vehicle printout at the start fill in the bits ie licence name start km and town the finish km - town as if it was an analogue then at the end of shift do another print out fill in and keep the 2 together for 28 days do this every day you work till you get your new card back …
Same unit or different one? I.e. It could be a faulty tacho rather than card.
I’ve had this message before, usually one of the 11 plates, fine in others, the 11plate works once you’ve blown into the card slot, I assume it’s dirty inside maybe?
I’d apply for a replacement ASAP but keep your existing card then return it once the new one arrives.
(Done this myself before with no problem).
maybe this (from Commercial Motor)
Digital tachograph driver cards could be failing as a result of where they are being stored. John Robson, commercial manager at Dodds Transport, has had three drivers come to him with malfunctioning cards in the past six weeks and believes it could be because they are storing their cards in their wallets.
He says: “I telephoned the DVLA to report the damaged cards and was asked where the cards were stored. I told the lady the drivers kept them in their wallets. She said that if the cards are stored in wallets, next to credit cards, then the magnetic strip on a credit card can render the digi-cards useless.”
Robson was amazed that it appeared to be a problem the DVLA was aware of, as he didn’t believe any warnings or guidance notes had been issued. Speaking to the DVLA office that handles calls regarding digital tachograph cards, MT was able to confirm that it is indeed a common problem.
“I would say on average I speak to about three drivers a day that have malfunctioning cards,” says a DVLA employee. “We always ask where they keep their cards and more often than not it is in their wallets.”
In a statement to MT, the DVLA says: “The Agency is aware of the requirement to keep drivers on the road. In view of this, we replace malfunctioning cards free of charge, and as a matter of urgency.” Asked whether the DVLA is planning to put out a warning on this matter, MT was told that although the DVLA issues the cards, it is VOSA’s responsibility to provide such guidance.

You don’t send your old card back until you receive the new one, I’ve never had a problem with DVLA and have received both my licence and driver card within a week of sending for them, I know some people seem to have problems but they’re not always bad
Have you tried cleaning the memory chip on the card with a soft clean cloth ?
It only takes the memory chip to get a bit greasy to stop the card being readable, it doesn’t even have to be noticeably dirty.
Anyway that aside, if the card really is faulty you should notify DVLA and order a replacement, you can drive for 15 days without a card but must do vehicle printouts at the start and end of the shift, put your name or licence number on the printouts and sign them.

you now have to return your faulty card with your application
e) a replacement digital tachograph card as my previous
one has been (see important note D over the page):
malfunctioning ✖ damaged ✖
If your card is malfunctioning or has been damaged you
must return it with this application. A fee of £19 is required for
damaged cards. Now fi ll in section 2 and 3 and then send your
application to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AZ.
So if it takes them longer than 2 week to send a new one guessing you can claim for loss of earnings?

I was surprised because they never use to ask for it back. I can only assume its to stop 2 cards being used unless your saying you lost it and want to pay £19 to be on the fiddle…
Phone DVLA and report it as lost. (Fee will apply but you’ll get your new card pretty rapid…)
You can order a new one over the phone as long as you can pay them by credit/debit card, I did this about 6 weeks ago and my new card arrived in 3 working days.
Just destroy your old card when you have ordered your new one and work off printouts until it arrives.
Replacement
If your card has been lost or stolen, you must apply for a replacement
card within seven days. You should either fill in this form or if there are
no changes to your details phone 0300 790 6109 (between 8am and
7pm Monday to Friday, and between 8am to 2pm on Saturdays). We
only accept payments by Visa, Mastercard or Delta over the phone.
We will issue a replacement driver card within five working days of
receiving a valid application.

That’s what I phoned, all I can say. I got to speak to someone though so they may have updated the procedure recently. Is there no option to speak to someone at the end of the automated options ?
And paying for it, I was under the impression that you wanted it sorting asap, sometimes it’s worth paying tbh but you are right, you shouldn’t have to pay for it if it’s damaged. As long as it’s reported in time and the documents sent off it’s on them to get the card to you before your printout days run out.
