I think training LGVs are too -but I stand to be corrected - as they are not used for “hire or reward” in the sense that they do not carry goods.
Some-one will shoot me if I am wrong :open_mouth:

Privat HGV is just the taxation class.

ROG is correct in that the vehicle can not be used for ‘Hire or Reward’.

The cost of the tax disc is similar to that of a private car.

our units are only plated at 28ton(high cube, low weight) the tax for these is only £175! thats less than my car! grrrr!

This might answer your questions for PM him.

you can run a truck on a private tax as long as its not for hire or reward but as far as i know you must have your fifth wheel plate covered or removed most that show them put covers on so a question i have does that mean you can drive a truck on private tax on a 7.5ton licence i have always been led to beleive this is the case, but i mite be wrong as the licences and rules change all the time.

Not true for taxation purposes. Depending on the licence you hold, it may be necessary to remove the Fifth wheel.

I have a tractor unit which is classed as Private HGV (Well, it’s on Historic Tax as it was registered in 1971, but thats another subject!). It is insured as Private but as a Class 1 licence holder, I am able to tow a trailer with it, but not for Hire or Reward.

This subject has been covered many times on here, so a quick search may get the correct information!

Correct: Private HGV" means a heavy vehicle that is not used to carry goods commercially. Good examples are garage shunters taking trailers to test, or preserved vehicles newer than the cut-off date for the historic taxation class.

the wagon i did my “C” training & test in was in this tax band… I know because when I drove thru the liverpool tunnel it was only £1.30, which I questioned, and was told it’s taxed private…

Well thanks for answering my quistion so onto the next one.
could i use a tractor unit as a motor home for the occasional weekend away.
I work in a coachworks and am thinking if the boys can build and fit aero kits to fit maybe they could box the rear of the chassis making the top area flush.
Dont know if anyone has done this but if the there is anyone running a unit just as a bit of fun let me know would like to hear how you go about it.

i think there is a tax band for motorhomes so it may then come under that also dvla will need informing as u are changing the vehicle use iand f u are making the vehicle into a motorhome so will insurance…

Yes agreed. The best thing is to phone the DVLA in advance and ask what the procedure will be. Insurance is always the tricky one. Insurance companies are never very on the ball with modified vehicles of any sort.
If its not listed on their computer then they have no idea!! :open_mouth:

We converted a coach to carry a stock car it was a while ago so don’t know if law has changed but to be classed as a motorhome it had to have beds and a cooker and a sink fitted.

Insurance was not a problem we went through insurers that advertised in motorsport magazines there are plenty to choose from or if you know an operator who is friendly enough just ask them to add it to there fleet policy and pay them.
But in my opinion insurance will be no problem at all.
