When you get a print out from a didgi i have noticed that next to the break sometimes there is an astrix next to it any idea why ?
I believe it denotes that the break is over 1 hour. Check to see if this is the case.
Yeah does that with me but why

Cheers Harry i had noticed it was usually after a longer rest period so i think you may be right

It’s because you’ve had a break of a hour or more and it thinks it might be part of a split daily rest or something like that.
I thought you had to have a minimum rest period of 3 hours for it to be classed as a split rest.

THis has nothing to do with a split rest you are right this must be a minimum of 3 hours and cant be taken in blocks of 1 hour. I think it makes it easier for them to see your breaks have been taken.

I never said anything about a split break being an hour I meant when you reach an hours worth of break it might think you are going to carry on with that break and perhaps have it as part of a daily split . I’ve got a print out on me with 59 mins on and no astorik next to it. Tachograph where are you ? .

It has everything to do with split daily rest.
Because the digi tacho still works to the pre April 2007 EU regulations the asterix denotes any break of over 1 hour which you used to be able to use toward a split daily rest.
Pre April 2007 you could split the rest into 3 parts, with the shortest being 1 hour and the longest and last part being at least 8 hours, totalling 12 hours, which is why it marks any break/rest of at least 60 minutes.
The asterix now has no meaning unless it is marking a period of at least 3 hours.

Unknown activity.
If you stick your card in and start your shift at say 06:00 it will mark the period between 00:00 and 05:59 with a ‘?’ as it doesn’t know what you were doing during that period because the card wasn’t in the machine, that is time that will be assumed as rest. Any other periods during the shift when the card isn’t in the machine and for which you don’t do a manual entry will also be marked with a ‘?’.
so i could have been run over but still get a ?

Yep, your card wasn’t in the VU so it didn’t know what you were doing. It will show something like
? 00:00 05:59 05h59
As I said it is assumed to be rest, on our analysis sheets those periods come back marked as ‘Rest Assumed’, but it can’t mark it as rest just in case you were doing something else such as driving an analogue vehicle. If you leave your card in on a night out you obviously don’t get the ‘?’ because then there is a mode recorded for that time.
