Preston hauliers

I seem to remember the name Mal Bradley was he a Scot my memory is not what it was, touch of alzhiemers creeping in.

Raymond SW:
Only discovered this site a couple of weeks ago but what a trip down memory lane. I worked at R Atkinson from 1973 to1980 then for Harrisons at Holmes. Took my test at Ribble Valley with Ian Binnie (hed just been given a TM bedford)
One fo the posts mentioned Big Dave Lansbury at Woodsides-sadly he died a few weeks ago.
Someone wrote about George and Malcolm Bradley. I think you worked in the wharehouse before you moved to a parcel firm.

Hi Raymond yes that was me Ian Bradley who worked in the wharehouse at Atkinsons, was that you who worked with Pete in the garage.

Sadly Dave did die a couple of weeks ago something we are all trying hard to come to terms with

The Mal Bradley i mentioned would be one not to be forgoten, he was a larger than life bloke, as for being a Scott that he isn’t he is Lancashire born and bred, the Scott you could associate with him the guy mentioned on this thread Davy Landsborough who was our step father.

Thanks for trhe pixcs. i remember quite a few of the instructers, Wilf, Jack, Charlie, Gordon as well as Ian Binnie.
I prepared BVB for MOT one year before I had my class 1 so got a demo drive by Ian to the test station.
How do you come to have these pictures?

Can anyone remember a small father & son haulage business called J ? Edge & Son , who were based near to Bambers feed warehouse off St. George Street, Preston ? I think they only ran one wagon between them, and they delivered barrels of oil from the Fina depot in Preston to garages and agricultural suppliers such as Preston Farmers. They also sold sawdust ( in large hessian sacks ). As a youngster I can remember going there with my father on Saturday mornings in the middle 1960 s . Their last wagon I recall seeing was a maroon-coloured Bedford T.K. in the middle 1970 ` s. I would be grateful to learn if anyone can update me of what became of the family. I know a lot of the surrounding area has been re-developed in recent years. Thanks, cattle wagon man.

That’s because I owned the lorry from 1984 to 2003, so I have rather a lot of photos of it!

What used to get “right up my nose” was the R.T. I.T.B. because we had no choice as hauliers,we had to pay a levy of 1% of our payroll! regardless if you used their services! in my experience it was just a “jolly” to train dossers off the dole how to pass their HGV tests( and they usually had no intention of working in the industry) so a shot of the “Ribble Valley” fleet is like a red rag to a bull as far as I’m concerned!! We had a similar bunch near us,Lancaster and District Training Services------give me strength its all coming flooding back!!! You have no idea how I cheered when the RTITB was disbanded!!! Hoo-ray!!! Bewick.

Right on Bewick , My old firm got taken to court and fined for not paying the levy even after it was admitted in court that we could train our drivers our selves far better that the RTITB. What a load of old B###### they were !

Yea I know I wasn’t alone and though they never had to take us to court to get their “Tax” I did always go to the wire and it was the very last bill we paid “under extreme duress”.One year I nearly suceeded in claiming some money back before I’d paid the levy, but they tumbled it at the last minute!!! nice try though!!! The London lorry ban had the same effect on me,blatant political that was,and we used to flout it something terrible! and get letter after letter, never got done though.A lot of boroughs wern’t in the scheme so the map was like a patchwork quilt, what a joke!! Cheers Dennis.

Does anybody remember RAMSDENS HAULAGE owned by the Latham family who also owned LATHAM’S TRANSPORTERS AND LATHAM’S AUTOBULK. They also owned Crossley House where Ribble Vally Training Group was based. Walter Latham and Billy Latham used to live in Crossley House befor renting out to Ribble Valley. I worked for Ramsden’s in 1965 and in 1966 moved over to Latham’s car transporters till 1973. Ramsdens was also the agents for M.A.N IN 1973 or 1974. I bought a M.A.N and started on middle east with it in Jan.1975. the old M.A.N served me well for a good few years.

i worked for ramsdens from 77 to 79

I know its not strictly Preston but I recall from my P&O days Lawsons of Adlington - they had some tidy stuff (well worked mind!) think they did mainly traction work for Ferrymasters and Pandoro

A few pages back someone asked for photos of David Duxbury’s trucks.
David and Janet where really nice people to work for I did 7 or 8 trips to Tehran for them in 1977.
I know Janet died tragically after I left but what about David?
The f89 pictured is on it’s first trip and the photo is near Marand in Iran.
I have some others of volvo 290’s of theirs that I drove but can’t seem to get them on from
photobucket as its a while since i did it. Getting old and all that, soon forget these days

David Duxbury went on to start and run a very sucessful Pet Cremitorium business on Wigan Road. He got the idea when he saw one on holiday in America.

I work with his son John, he will be delighted that his dads trucks have appeared on TNUK and that his family are so warmly remembered.

Big Al:
Mushroomman sent me this picture of a well known Preston Haulier, you can just recognise the livery of David Duxbury’s White under the muck.
A livery still carried by David’s son Ian on his Duxbury Transport lorries, based just round the corner from our yard on Red Scar Ind Estate, thanks Steve.

regards Big Al

I’ve mentioned this thread to John Duxbury this morning and he very pleased that his Dads firm has been remembered.

John has told me his Dad had the first two Whites in the country and he still has the publicity pictures taken at a local hotel.

He also tells me that the step frame tilt in the picture (if I descibed it properly) was a very expensive extendable trailer that the manufacturer built from his Dads design.

Ian (who I don’t know) still runs the Commercial Vehicle Garage on Red Scar but sold the transport side to Rawcliffes (now in Skelmersdale) and the drivers were TUPEd accross onto their books.

This has been a nice topic to read as a local Preston lad I can almost follow my entire career in the pictures in this thread.

I do remember Lawsons, but they didn’t do much for Pandoro that I can recall. The main man in Adlington, as far as Pandoro was concerned, was Wilf Monk, and who had five S83 Fodens on traction for them in the late 70s. He even had the P&O flags painted on the front of the unit.
