A Visit to Crossley House Penwortham in 1983
RTITB Atkinson
Excellent selection of pics! I used to like going down there too. In fact, I remember going down there on Christmas Day around 1983, when I’d just been given my first 35mm camera, and when I also photographed…
Here’s the same Viewline Atki at the end of its days, in 1986:
Many of the Atkis in the yard featured Jennings-style sleeper pods by Longton Coachcraft, who also worked out of Crossley House in their early days.
That was one of the Motherwell wagons 57 - Moray Firth - it had an L10-325 ■■■■■■■ in it. There were a few 4-11s on the same job but they had Gardner 6LXDT 290s.
A few pages back someone asked for photos of David Duxbury’s trucks.
David and Janet where really nice people to work for I did 7 or 8 trips to Tehran for them in 1977.
I know Janet died tragically after I left but what about David?
The f89 pictured is on it’s first trip and the photo is near Marand in Iran.
I have some others of volvo 290’s of theirs that I drove but can’t seem to get them on from
photobucket as its a while since i did it. Getting old and all that, soon forget these days
I worked for Williames Transport Group. Head office Belfast. I was based at Trafford Park late 1960 -70s. We used to change night trunk to Aldergrove stay over and return the next night via Larne Stranrae. We used to pick up Williames Containers at Preston Dock. I remember D&A and Caledonian used to move most of Williames Containers. Most of the loads were Irish Peat. Northern Ireland trailers and was it Ronaldsway containers, for Isle of Man. Woodside Brothers had taken over Williames work as they decided to concentrate on Airfreight business.
Two more shots of the Woodside Brothers Fleet and then one of Halls European Foods a firm that was based on the industrial estate at the side of the M61 at Chorley.
What about Sweda for longton then turned in Viking transport?
Peter

I am not 100% sure but I think M Threlfall bought out BGM about 1993
These pics were taken at the Freckleton yard when M. Threlfall fleet was as high as 65 artics, as a result of The Benson’s Crisp work.
All the in house Bensons Fleet prior to M. Threlfall taking over the distribution were leased through Ryder, this shot was taken at Treales at a local paint and bodyshop.
George Smith.
This fella drove the F7 Volvo artic for Quinton Hazell Automotive Ltd at Warton (F7 link page 6) before becoming an owner driver in 1986.
Although he has Lytham on the door worked for a long time out of Factory Lane Penwortham with a Spanish Dodge (Ex Burridge) then a Renault G290, Sed Atki then an ERF before packing it in.

Ford rigid at the old site in Kirkham
I used to deliver spuds to the old factory in Kirkham, i think it was on Marquis Street ? It was owned by the Johnson Family
In the early 60’s most crisp factories had gone to deliveries in bulk, but not Marquis crisps, 1 cwt hessian sacks 20 to the
ton 20 ton loads all carried in on your backs. Being a young strong buck in them days I used to put the smallist kid on the
trailer and help carry them in, one time when i was desperate for a quick tip I goaded them by carrying 2 x 1cwt bags
they soon all wanted to beat the mad yorkshire man. In side the factory everything was done by hand, including the frying
of the crisps. The girls moved them through a long channel of hot fat or cooking oil using chip scopes. happy days
