Gone but not forgotten, I was sat at a dinner table in Blackpool a couple of weeks ago, it was a real steam and diesel table.
Mike Wilkinson, his dad George, Alan Atkinson and John Johnson of Banks. Naturally we got talking about Atkinson lorries,
Alan Atkinson told me he used to work in the drawing office at the Atkinson factory on Winery Road with your Dad, he also
mentioned he had sold a Viewline to you. When I told him Andy Ingham had wired up my Borderer for me he said he also
worked in the drawing office at Winery Road (very small Atkinson world Chris) regards Big Al

Small world indeed, Al. Andy Ingham also did some work on my Dad’s Bond Equipe, I think. A couple of other Atki men did jobs on it too. Of course, Geoff Yates of Longton Coachcraft was also an Atkinson man. My very first car was bought off an Atki man, as was my brother’s Bond Equipe - the cab shop manager at Atkinson had previously been the Works Manager at Bond Cars in Preston - and I still have that old Bond today. Sadly, I had to sell the Viewline after 19 years of happy ownership.

Making the world even smaller, I now live in a small village in Berkshire, and my GP is the son of Atkinson’s Managing Director!

Come on lads someone has to remember Richard Parker haulage from Garstang, formerly red Seddon diesels changing to Scanias towards the end.

The firm was owned by my uncle Cliff Smith who worked as the transport manager before buying the company, they also had a office on Preston docks from where they ran a shipping company called unit shipping, servicing Irland.

The bulk of there work was uk but ventured out to the middle east on a couple of occations.

I have spoke to Cliff with a view to getting some of his old pictures so watch this space.

Hi Ian

came here doing missionery work in 1983    . Happy New Year to you and the family, hope to see you

Funny old world Chris just received an email from one Matt Fishwick who used to work with me at George Hunt Crane Hire, when we
finished he went on to GWS and when they were taken over he went onto Ainscough Crane Hire. Matt had found me by googling Atkinson
and ended up on my website, we last met about 1995 and I lost touch with him. We have just had a good chat and it turns out his Dad was
in the same apprentice intake as Alan Atkinson, he went to Seddon after the take over and also ran the big parts department at Walton Summit.
Retired now he still has a great interest in Atkinson vehicles, Matt tells me he has many pictures from Winery road days, regards Big Al

and i served my time there along side john draper john collinson chris carroll and many other apprentices

weres the photo of the leyland beaver gone taken out side ridings that was posted earlier

Not quite actually.

Blundell & Rimmer were originally from Halsall. They moved to Burscough and were one of the first businesses to occupy the new industrial estate on the site of the Fleet Air Arm base Ringtail. They were quite a large concern in their pomp and had a great many ERFs with Gardner engines, some of which were some of the first C-Series with 8LXCs. A former B&R director once told me he would go on ā€˜safari’ to different parts of the UK when local ERF agents couldn’t (or wouldn’t) supply Gardner-engined ERFs. He would emerge from trips to Norfolk or the west country with deposits placed on new tractors after ā€˜loosening’ other people’s orders.

In their latter years, they started doing a lot of container and lift-tank transport, by which time they were buying SK Mercedes tractors.

Penwortham had Viewline BVB 457H new, and that was later joined by CJJ 408H which had been new to the Failsworth group. The third Atki at Penwortham was a Borderer (just hiding at the back of the photo), not a Viewline.

im sure he had a viewline coz he showed me a pic of it and it wasnt the ones above, he also drove an F10 for them i think, will try and get the no. plate of his when im next round

Does the RTITB still impose a levy on the Road transport industry ? I absolutley was dead against it !! We didn’t need it but were forced to conribute !! The one and only time I was persuaded to use them by my pal Malcolm Woodhouse RIP the local group ( which we were members of via an aquistion of a member )told me they were fully booked up with how shall I put it " referals from the employment exchange " and all I wanted was to put a young lad through his test who had a job with us and had and went on to have long term employment with us . The answer I got off the Group manager was the dole scroungers were just as important as the lads that had jobs !! Well I can tell you that we used to have the Training group motors in our yard for running repairs and the dossers they had with them never had any intention of working in transport !! they were only on the course to keep their dole the lazy Bs !! When all around them trailers were being sheeted and roped they weren’t interested !! Guess what I told the RTITB bloke when he called next time------ You will have to sue me from now on to get the levy out of me !! And they did the Bs !! But they never got it without a fight !!
