Preston hauliers

ainsworth martin still run a few lorries in gloucester for prestoplan
word his that they are up and running again under aslightly different name
also gloucester depot which a year ago had 40 wagons on road got into trouble due to the activities of the then transport manager
and a court case his in progess due to the forementioned above transport activities

Hmm a bit off topic I know but I spent 50 years living not far from Gloucester, glad to get away from it not to much of any good going on there. Only one industry thrives there.

friend of mine works there in the office (preston) and they are deffo in administration, but still operating yet as far as i’m aware

Is that my mate Alf ? I have used Ainsworth & Martin for many years now and am sad to see them in administration. regards Big Al

It seems they originally had (from 2006) an O licence for just 4 trucks and 8 trailers in Prestonplant, Gloucester.
Around June 08 they applied to move from Prestonplant to Gossington Truckstop and up the O licence to 40 trucks, 100 trailers.

The co. was bought by a private buyer in September 2005 who was almost immediately summoned by the Traffic Commissioner due to ongoing maintenence issues. He requested 6 months to implement changes, was granted this and achieved a marked improvement on fleet spot check scores.

Only in spring of this year they applied to raise the O licence at Preston from 55/66 to 80/130 vehicles/trailers.
Seems odd to do that then go into admin only a matter of months later.

Has anyone read Harold Bridges book “As I Remember” It’s a fantastic read and well written in a down to earth sort of style. I’ve read it twice and found it hard to put down. Dunno if you can still get a copy.

When I first started to read it one evening, I thought it was quite dull and rather self-congratulatory. But, as a native of Preston, and remembering their little Albions around town, I persisted with it.

And then I found I couldn’t put it down and I finished it about 1 a.m.! It’s an object lesson in starting with naff-all and with no training, and building up a number of sucessful businesses in different fields.

I have re-read it several times since - my copy came from a secondhand book shop in Newbury a few years ago. It’s on my bookshelf now, alongside all the Peter Davies books

I’ve got some very happy memories of Newbury, but thats a completly different subject. I also saw Bridges about in the fifties/sixties. But arived at the book by pure accident.

A joy to read, whether interested in transport or not. That’s how all businesses were grown in those days. Training had not been invented. Dont get me started on Training, accountants and solicitors. They all just invent business for them selves.

Hi Chris just back from competing in a Lancashire Road Run from Leyland Commercial Museums
North all the way up to The Truckhaven north of Carnforth where we stopped for a bite of lunch.
The weather turned a little north of Lancaster (which was an absolute nightmare to get through)
I left the run their and came back down the motorway ( Grand Prix on at 1600 hrs) The rest headed
off cross country to come round by Gisburn (calling at Miles Fox’s yard) and back to Leyland. I will
post a few pictures later. regards Big Al

Graham I gave Ainsworth & Martin Gloucester a lot of work running equipment from our yard at Llywswen to Red Scar Preston in October November 2007
In the end I had to give a lot of the work to Burgoynes as Ainsworth & Martin let me down, I would ask for 4/5 40fts to load in the morning and they would
say yes we can do that, The lorries would be turning up at any time of the day mostly in the afternoons. regards Big Al
