Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many chickens can be hauled on an artic at any one time■■? How many cages can be moved and how many chickens can be held in a tray■■?

I used to work on poultry haulage, but due to increases in the allowed lengths of trailers, my info might be just a tad out of date…
We used to carry approx 4,600 chickens on an artic.
(I’m speaking of a 2+2 configuration that used an old style 40’ trailer.)

We carried 20 cages (known as ‘modules’)
Each module had 12 trays
Each tray could hold 18 - 22 chickens.
The actual number of chickens on a load could vary due to the size of the chickens and the number of chickens to be shifted from the farm. The weather also had to be taken into consideration because chickens can stand cold weather, but they need a bit more room to breathe and/or cool down when the weather is hot.

I think Washy_Jnr does this sort of thing out of Brackley but i could be wrong.
i looked into it myself once but the rates were poultry

Hi yasinjasin,im on Poultry livehaul,the number of birds is set by their avaerage weight…During the cold temps (Oct to March) were allowed up to 50kg of birds per tray and when the temp goes up (March to Oct) were allowed 48kg (down to 44kg if it’s really hot)
We carry 22 modules on a 45ft trailer,12 trays per mod,so 264 trays per load which means is were carrying small birds 32 per tray then total load is 8448 birds down to 18 per tray which is 4752

Yep, that thought had crossed my mind…
However, nothing that’s been written contravenes any animal welfare Regs that apply to the transport of live chickens.
Since I’m no longer doing that work and my experience was so long ago (approx 10 years,) I didn’t answer the question about access to water because I’ve no idea of the current legal position.
AFAIK, water has to be available once a journey exceeds a certain time/mileage, but we didn’t do any jobs that took more than a 4hr journey to get the birds back to base for killing.
For me, the OP’s agenda can be whatever he/she wishes.
