Very Good Orys.
I preferred it when most of the Eastern Bloc ran these We could outrun them.
Rendorseg is the Hungarian Police Force, although even they seem to have gone upmarket too.
Some of us don’t need to watch out for the bizzies Orys!

You would be surprised…
First: that Zhiguli is based on this Fiat, and as you can see it rides well:
(this is actually worth watching, a good piece of old style cinema, when chased were actually filmed with some real driving, not just made of 0.5 s cuts)
So in 70’s you would not have such a big chances against it, and thanks to tuning you will still struggle in 80s…
In 90s it might be diffeerent if you drove new western vehicle, but the Police who actually did a chasing had much better cars than average village constable
In my town there were VW Passats with top engines, they introduced them in 1991… And the ordinary cops were riding Polonez with Rover engines, you could be surprised…
As for the original Lada/Polski Fiat engines:
They were very unstretched engines, so they were very good for tuning…
My uncle was a rally/racing driver and he won 1 to 1 race with the guy driving BMW while my uncle was running Fiat 125p…
Also he won a Champion of Poland riding one of these:
when some of his opponents were riding Porshe or Lancia Stratos…
Syrena (the car on the picture) is something like Trabant, but much worse, but it was just enought to replace carburator with separate on from popular motorbike for each cylinder and out of sudden 170 km/h on it was no problem
But off course it is not all to my Uncle as it was not the case of even competition. On this time it wasn’t like today that the best drivers were racing best cars, it was just my uncle was a good driver who had to support himself with his own means and some small help from the Polish AA, while his opponents just had parents high in the Communist Party so they could have everything they wanted. But to have a good car and to drive it are two things…
Pulling the story ouf of topic, they wrote off both Lancias in crashes, so as the goverment had no more western money, they decided to please them with a Polonez - Stratos hybride using some salvage parts and a Polonez body:
I think Polonez capable of 330 km/h is not the thing you would except, especially after hearing Jeremy Clarkson’s opinion on that…
But Clarkson was a bit right, Polonez wasn’t the best handling car, so at these speeds, and with central placed engine
it was completely useless in rallies or races (but it would propably do very well in 1/4 mile drag racing
Back to the topic: there were some Police Polonez cars with harder suspension and 2.0 Mirafiori or even 2.2 Abarth engines, so you could be surprised. And then the secret police had their unmarked cars with some monstrual engines from the western cars put inside…
And do you know who holds the long distance speed record till today?
Tadamm:
(average speed on the 25000 km and 50000 km about 138 km/h
In 1973 we bit your record made by Simca, and then noone else bothered to give another try to this stupid record, as no sponsors were interested (the Polish record was sponsored by the goverment as a propaganda event, but in fact the main case was just to give some fun to the spoiled kids of apparatchicks ) so at least in one field in motoring we can still be the best
As for Czechoslovakia, they had one of the best cars of the Eastern Bloc ever:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatra_613
This is actually like a Porsche, but with a size of a limo…
Or to be fair on Mr Ledwinka and to be closer on the truth: Porshe is like Tatra, but smaller
And if I had too much money, I will buy one of them I drove it once and it’s amazing (however crap it might look)
Good old Top Gear clip on Tatra History, worth watching.
