Pointless nights out

So I’ve been Rugby to Glastonbury now heading up to Yate to load for Corby tip at 0430 tomorrow morning.

So I’ve to run up to Corby get on the doorstep and night out. Fine. But I’m going back past our yard which is maybe 45 mins from Corby. So I’ll get paid night out and then they’ll pay parking on top rather than me starting an hour earlier in the morning from the yard.

Is logic escaping me here? I don’t mind the night out, but it seems pointless to me?

I think I’d rather have the night out than start at some ridiculous time the morning tbh…but I don’t do early starts.

Do they tell you that you HAVE to have a night out, I mean if it was me (only if it was a bit later) I would have just gone home…as long as you get there on time in the morning what’s their problem?

High value load ? Park at yard [emoji6]as it will be your fault if you get done over

Like robroy if it was me and I’d rather be out than have to start at some ridiculous time. But yeah if it was later I’d go home.

I know at my company though drivers will be at the depot almost out of time yet they will drive to an industrial estate 20 minutes away just to stay out. So I think the planners can’t always keep up with which drivers will do absolutely anything to stay out and which ones will happily go home. And because the ones who want to stay out at all costs will make such a fuss if they end up home they just assume every tramper wants to stay out to keep it simple for them.

Probably want you to start as late as possible,so that you can cover a load…later on.

Well I say ■■■■ em. They get to go home so if the driver wants to who has any right to tell him/her they can’t :grimacing: sod the load they can find someone else :grimacing:

Yeah…but if you’ve told them you’re up for nights out, then it shouldn’t come as a surprise when they plan you one.

Yep. And this is why I wouldn’t go tramping again unless I could get a deal with the boss for occasional nights out or just 1 or 2 a week. Too easy to get shafted when the planners think your up for the full week out.

What time would you have to get out of your own bed to deliver at 4.30?

I would rather wake up on the doorstep than get up at 2.30

There’s possible two or three forms of logic, the cost of a night out compared to the diesel burn and unwarranted drivers hours is possibly what they are looking at, but you’ll probably only burn £35 in diesel compared to the cost of a night out, so theoretically it makes no sense.
I’d find a nice spot and get my feet up on their time and at their expense

Kind of irrelevant now. Collection took the Michael (three hours) so that’s me holed up for the night leaving me time to have a nine, travel to Corby (with a bit to spare shhhhh) starting at 0230 :open_mouth:

Normally I’d have a comment about that but actually on a Tuesday I need to really get back to make sure I can get my lad so starting early means they can’t stitch me up in the afternoon. I know my work for tomorrow so all being well I should be done by about 3pm.

Yeah I thought about the diesel aspect but then it doesn’t matter whether I park on the doorstep or call it a day on route and cover the rest of the miles in the morning - same miles just on a different day so there’s no saving there.

Yes. Always

Starting before 04hr00 means you’re a night worker, and so are limited to ten hours doesn’t it? Parking nearby means you have potentially longer day.

Not if your company have opted out

They could ‘opt out’ of whatever tf they liked, I still.would not start before 4 am.

It’s actually a collective agreement.
If they’re paying a handsome night shift premium…it’s not too hard to get the said collective to agree.
Everybody else…then gets automatically opted out :open_mouth:

Depends on how busy they are / gonna be towards the end of the week, a short day / drive time can’t be clawed back. Or it could save you using a reduced rest on 1 or both days

You could get stuck in an accident’s traffic on the morning that’d you’d have missed the night before.

Maybe non of that apples and he’s crap at his job?

When I’ve tramped it’s always been mike’s from home, so always wanted the nights out. But haven’t had a night out in over 8 years and whilst I’d have no problem with the odd one, I’d prefer not to. It depends on how you work with your company and what you prefer and if they can accommodate that without causing too many issues

I suppose it depends if you belong to the ‘’ tin box/me own bed’’ crew, and look upon nights out as some kind of disadvantage.
