If tolls were scrapped the vast tailbacks would be reduced dramatically and the high levels of pollution engines would also be cut. We are now told that the Toll Charge is in fact a congestion charge, and the recent rise from £1.00 to £1.50 for cars is to ease jams. The jams are far worse since the tolls have been increased. Meaning that effectively this congestion charge is causing congestion at the Dartford Crossings. If a motorist arrives at the booths and cannot make payment, then all traffic is stopped whilst the motorist is directed to the hard shoulder. There is the extra time needed to give change to motorists now that the charges are higher.

Probably not much chance, it makes something like £40m a year profit for the Gubbermint .
And besides that plans are afoot already to remove the delays whilst still collecting the cash!!

Weren’t the tolls supposed to be lifted once they had paid for the construction of the bridge? I think this happened in about 2001 
Honestly can’t ever see them scrapping the charge…I can however see a system like the congestion charge being installed so you pay either before your journey or after.
That is I’m sure the way it will go.
On a side note when I lived at Chafford hundred near lakeside for £10 a year I used to be able to go over the bridge as many times as I wanted 
Was the only thing good about living there tho!

Any chance we could get the mersey tunnels involved too. They tolls are going up again after an MP put a bill through parliament last year to have the tolls increased… he lives in Devon.
The Mersey tunnels were supposed to be free once the tolls had paid the construction costs off. They say they’ve still not been paid for due to interest etc. What a load of cobblers

Well at least they’re looking at ways of getting rid of the barriers, I lose the will to live sitting in the Q’s round there, so unecessary.
I do think they should build another crossing with all the money they’re raking in, if anything happened to the bridge or the tunnels causing long term closure, there would be major problems in that area.

But they could start using some common sense, and accept payment on either side of the toll booth for our foreign friends to use, Qs are bad because it takes so long for them to pay the charge, the Qs were never that bad before the influx of left hookers using our roads.
Could petition them to reduce the tolls for trucks so every one pays the same, that seems fair to me!
